Fall Flower Arrangement

Morning Friends!

Are we getting excited for this week?!? Turkey day is one of my favorite holidays. You get to wear your stretchy pants and get after it. I have a strong weakness for mash potatoes and gravy! Total side note, but have any of you tried the new Starbucks turkey cranberry stuffing panini? Oh man, its been gearing me up for Thursday. Really good!

For my family, we switch each year and spend it with one side of the family. Often times, we still try to make our rounds to all three places. Can’t be mad at it sometimes, that’s three different times we are eating. Fat pants are needed for sure! I like to be the guest that is the best by bringing a dessert and some flowers. I like to make my own arrangement, it just means that much more to family. This year, I turned to Jennifer from Busy Bee Floral Design to give me some step by step directions to make the perfect fall arrangement. She is sharing it with you today too! You can make this arrangement a day before and store in a cool place, this way you are not rushed on Thursday. If you are hosting thanksgiving, this would be a perfect arrangement for your table. Head to your local flower mart, and get to picking. If you are in Nothern California, we suggest the SF Flower Mart or the United Wholesale Flowers (this is where I go).

Step by Step Instructions by Jennifer from Busy Bees Floral Design





Sumac- greenery
Dinner Plate Dahlias- burgundy flower (upper left)
Peach David Austin Garden Rose (center)
White Ranunculus
Snowberries (lower left)
Blackberries (upper left)
Carnations (light pink color)
Chocolate Queen Anne’s lace (lower left below the Dahlia)
Amaranth (upper right)

Other Items

Floral Foam
Floral Tape (taped down the floral foam)

Step 1 

Proper preparation makes flowers last much longer.

Prep the flowers by cutting off the bottom half of the leaves on each stem of all the flowers. Removing the leaves before placing flowers in water decreases the chance of getting harmful bacteria.  Bacteria will significantly reduce the lifespan of your flowers. I also made sure to cut the bottoms of each stem at an angle to allow the flower to drink more water.

Step 2

Don’t underestimate the important of the vase

You will need to choose a vase based on the types of flowers you will be using. The vase is an important part of the overall aesthetic of the arrangement. We used a gold pedestal vase here.

Step 3 

Use a floral foam

To stabilize the flowers in the vase, I use a floral foam which stays at the bottom of the vase. Floral foams keep your arrangements in place.



Step 4 

Add Greenery…we are getting close!

I start by placing the Sumac greenery in the vase to build a base for the arrangement.

Step 5

Add Flowers to bring to life

Add the flowers! This is when the arrangement really starts coming to life.  Choose a focal point and arrange a clutter of mixed flowers. First I begin by using the Dinner Plate Dahlias since they are the focal point of the arrangement. I then began adding the roses and the Amaranth to fill in the empty spaces. Then begin using the other flowers in empty spots.







Step 6

Make sure there are no holes

Fill in the holes. Make sure each of the flowers are represented throughout the arrangements and have a nice flow throughout. Too many of one flower will over power the arrangement. To finish, I always like to add more greenery and fill in the empty spots.

Fall Recipe – Pumpkin Cookies

I don’t know about you, but I’m totally the type of person that wants pumpkin everything this time of year.  So I’m dying to share this pumpkin cookie recipe with you guys.  They are so delish, very soft and moist with a cake like texture. The frosting is just the right added touch, not too sweet, but the right amount of cream to offset the pumpkin.  They are really great anytime of year, but an essential this time of year.

1 cup butter flavored shortening

1 cup white sugar

1 egg

1 tsp vanilla extract

1 cup canned pumpkin puree

2 cups all purpose flour

1 tsp baking soda

1 tsp salt

1 tsp ground cinnamon

1 (3.4oz) package of instant vanilla pudding mix

1 (16oz) container cream cheese frosting

Preheat oven to 350 degrees F and grease your cookie sheets


In a large bowl, cream together the butter flavored shortening and sugar.  Beat in the egg and vanilla, then stir int he pumpkin puree.  Combine the flour, baking soda, salt, cinnamon, and vanilla instant pudding mix; gradually mix into the pumpkin mixture.  Roll into walnut sized balls and place them 2 inches apart onto the prepared cookie sheets.

Bake for 12-15 min in the preheated oven, until lightly browned at the edges.  Allow to cool completely before frosting with the cream cheese frosting.

Voila!  So fresh and so good!!

National Macaron Day – Sweet & Saucy Shop

Well hey guess what today is??? We had to take advantage of National Macaron day since it’s one of our favorite desserts.  These almond crispy outer shell little delights with creamy fillings just have our hearts.  They are delicate, decadent and they are just down right pretty and well…Fabulously French…need I say more?  For the prettiest and tastiest ones, we went straight to the source – Sweet & Saucy Shop.  They do the most beautiful Macarons, and boy are they tasty!!  With a variety of flavors and their talented bakers, they come up with the most fabulous of designs for these pretty little cookies.  Let’s have a look….


The colors and details on these are to die for.  They make any event so special and really put that personalized detail into the desserts.

Shop Spotlight – Sweet & Saucy Shop

Let’s start off by saying, this post is really yummy… Today we are putting the spotlight on one of our favorite bakeries, Sweet & Saucy Shop.  We have been lucky enough to work with Melody Brandon, the co-owner of Sweet & Saucy for many a photo shoot and event and our clients and our own tummies are never disappointed!  If you are one of the 170k that follow along with their Instagram, you know they go above and beyond with creativity in their amazing dessert designs, specifically with their incredible personalized cakes and hand painted macarons.  But if you need just a little taste of yumminess you can easily stop into one of her two storefront locations in Long Beach, CA and Newport Beach, CA and pick up a bite sized treat if you’d like!  Melody was kind enough to answer a few questions for us on bakery life, being a working mom and an entrepreneur, keep reading for all the delicious details!

I originally thought I was going to be an elementary school teacher and went to college for that, but then found myself newly married at the age of 21 and baking and cooking on a daily basis for friends and family and loving it!  I saw an ad for pastry school on TV and that was that…I switched career choices and went to pastry school the following year.  Once I graduated I worked at a place for less than a year and then decided to go out on my own.  Sweet & Saucy Shop was started in my one bedroom apartment and I grew it for 2.5 years before my parents partnered with me to open an actual storefront!

Well the job I was at there wasn’t any room for me to move up creatively and I was always a go getter, so I figured why not try to do it out of my house and then I could make anything I wanted to.

How do you find inspiration for such creative and fun designs?

I love working with other talented and creative vendors and typically just talking with a client or planner really makes my mind start dreaming up new ideas.  Once you make a lot of cakes and desserts you start seeing anything from a pillow pattern to a dress as something you can turn into cake!

What is your favorite part of owning a bakery?

I love a lot of aspects!  It is really great being able to employ people and let them live out their creative talents and see them grow as artists.  I also love that it is a family business that allows me to be around the people I love the most and I also love being a part of people’s special moments in their lives….  Whether it is a 1st birthday, an anniversary or a wedding, celebrating with sweets is so much fun!

 What is it like running a business with your family?
After running a business with my family I can definitely see that there are pros and cons and that it should definitely be thought of a lot before jumping into it.  For me, it was definitely the right decision and I could never do it without my family. I have always gotten along great with my mom who is my business partner so navigating the tricky waters of business with a partner was totally doable for us and we love the fact that we can always trust each other, rely on each other, and of course we love getting to be around each other a ton.  My parents believed in me when it was just the beginning stages and invested in our company so we could really make Sweet & Saucy Shop a brick and mortar location.  My dad, husband, sister, aunt, cousins, etc have all worked along side us at one time and that is a pretty amazing thing I think.

On the other hand, I could see that being in business with family if you both aren’t on the same page or tend to have had issues in the past that it would be very difficult and something that could drive a wedge between your non business relationship as well as your relationship in business.

What are the best and most difficult parts of being a working mom?

These days it is mostly just hard being a working mom if I am honest.  I constantly am pulled in a million directions and never feel like I can do anything 100%, which is always how I have done things my entire life!  I never want to look back on my early years with my kiddos and feel like I missed out on anything so I arrange my whole life to have them with me almost the whole time, but of course that makes working quite the struggle.  I know this early stage is probably the hardest so I am just trying to stay above water and learn the different things that help me personally be able to handle these days where I wish I had double the amount of time to fit in all that I need to do haha.

How would you describe your personal style and how is it reflected into your shop?

I would say that my style is clean and more simplistic, but I love a good bold accent!  I don’t like anything overdone, but attention to detail and placing that in the right place is key in design I think.

Do you have any advice for any budding entrepreneurs out there?

Get ready for working non stop!  :)  I definitely think people underestimate the amount of time and energy you need to give a business and your employees.  You really need to make sure you are ready to give it 100% and make the sacrifices needed, but of course if it is something you love then “most” of the time it doesn’t seem like work!

Our brownies and cookies straight out of the oven always get me!
