Spotlight: Obsessed With Essentials

This past holiday season I decided to take the plunge into the ever popular essential oils.  I have seen this little revolution happen all around me for the past 5 years and little by little it peaked my interest.  I never bought into it though until I started seeing for myself the incredible benefits that can be had from using these all natural resources.  Some of these stories include avoiding sickness altogether, most commonly the cold and flu virus, headaches, anxiety, allergies, receiving natural boosts energy, getting a good nights sleep and the list goes on!!  You mean I don’t have to medicate myself with over the counter drugs constantly when one of my family members or myself is experiencing these common ailments??  All natural did you say???  Ok I want to know more….and although I felt late in the game when I finally invested in this fabulous phenomenon, I felt the need to share all the knowledge that was at my fingertips.  This was all too good since we live in a world where we are constantly striving to use only the best to promote health and wellness for our loved ones.  It’s what it’s all about right??

All photos by the lovely Megan Welker

So like I said this past holiday season, I told the hubby I wanted some oils to jumpstart my collection.  He was all for it, so I went the guru herself.  She is a dear friend of ours here at Beijos and we recently visited her lovely home so she could educate us a little.  It’s the wonderful Melody Brandon, who also co- owns the ever popular  and yummy Sweet & Saucy Shop!! How does she have time for this being a bakery owner, a mama and investing her time into her newest passion with these essential oils?? Who knows…she’s what we call a super mom!! You need to follow her instagram feed over on Life on Loma to see this super mama in action.  Anyway, here is what she has to say…

How and when did you discover your connection with essential oils?
I started looking for more natural health solutions when I got pregnant with my daughter Blake about 5 years ago and started having to question why things like why best friend “Excedrin” weren’t allowed haha.  I always had grown up in a home that used modern medicine for everything and wasn’t really aware of all the side effects that it can have on you, so when it came time to prepare for having my own little one I quickly realized how helpless I felt and started to research natural health options.  I had never heard the words “essentials oils” until I was 28 years old and when I saw my sister in law using them on her kids and singing their praises I knew it was something I needed to look into more.  I found out that actually SO many people were using them and I made the jump and got my first kit with Doterra for a Christmas present and have been obsessed ever since!

How has this obsession affected your life and your family?
It has been the biggest blessing ever.  I rarely, if ever, have to go to the doctors office, pay co pays, worry about what to do when my kids are feeling sick, etc.  My son who is 2.5 years old has never even had to be on any type of over the counter medication…definitely a huge time and money saver!  They not only have helped with physical health issues but are amazing for mental health too.  I am a busy mom with two businesses and absolutely love using them daily for hormonal support, stress, energy, etc.  Helping my friends and family use essential oils has been such a joy too and now that I share my passion on my personal Instagram account I have even got to connect with people in other countries!  Getting a text, call or email from someone saying their children finally slept through the night, their allergies actually went away, they haven’t had the domino effect of sickness every month in their family, and on and on really does make me so happy to share my passion and love of essential oils with not only my family, but others as well!

Tell us more about these cute little roller bottles you make?
Well since I have an addiction for anything gold and I hadn’t found anything that I loved look wise for roller bottles and labels that didn’t break the bank I decided to make them myself.  I had Tina Yang from @missmultee custom write them, then get them printed at a local sign shop and then I adhere all of them myself…can we say labor of love haha.  I love spoiling anyone who wants to join this oil journey with me so they always get some for free and then can conveniently have them in their purse or bag so they can use their oils throughout the day.

Give a the recipe for a common blend…
One of my favorite daily perfume blends that not only smells amazing but is also great for anxiety, stress and mood is Balance and Wild Orange. It is so refreshing as well since all citrus oils smell so yummy! I do 10-20 of each oil in a 10 ml roller bottle and then fill up with fractionated coconut oil.  I apply it to my wrists, back of the neck, temples or behind the ears!  I also place these oils on diffuser jewelry when I wear them!

What is your most used blend?
One of my most used blends is my “sanity” blend aka my “hotmess blend” for when I feel stressed out and am losing it!
It is 5-7 drops of these 6 oils…
Console
Serenity
Balance
Clary Sage
Peace
Peppermint

What is your advice to the essential oil beginner?
I say the most important thing is to be plugged into a essential oil community that can help you learn, answer your questions at 12am when you are freaking out over what to do for a fever, and offer you lots of continuing education so that you actually use your essential oils and don’t let them sit in a box in your cupboard!  That is my I love our private Facebook group, Obsessed with Essentials, because I found that having a support group was the main thing lacking for the essential oil community at large and it really is the deal breaker in your essential oil journey I feel like!

What is the best kept secret about this oil revolution?
That there really is an oil for EVERYTHING!  No joke…from bug bites, to panic attacks, fevers, immune support or just a replacement for that toxic candle in your home, essential oils really are so versatile and once you start, you really can’t stop!  As far as a specific oil that is most underrated I would have to agree with my girlfriends Jesi Haack and Carissa Jowett and say that Vetiver oil is AMAZING and they wish they had known about it earlier!  The smell is so unique and earthy and both of them are addicted to diffusing it.  It is also the top oil for ADHD, great for anxiety, mood, and sleep among other things.

What is your favorite blend?
I absolutely love the “Anthro blend” for diffusing during the day in my house instead of candle. It is White Fir, Citrus Bliss, and Grapefruit!

Can you believe all of this amazing information???  Well it’s only a snippet so if you want to more and get plugged in with an essential oil community or watch a intro to essential oils webinar you can email Melody at obsessedwithessentials@gmail.com

So we can’t share this amazing info with out telling you about some other amazing things like making an all natural face toner!!

Interior Mood Board- Project Kitchen

Happy Monday! How was everyone’s weekend? Flew by too fast for me, as it always does. Last week, we did our Real Talk, and let you in on some fun news that Jacquelyn and I were getting to design our kitchens in our new homes this year. We are both so eager to start this process of creating our new space. It all starts with the most important room – the kitchen. The area where you gather around the most, where you entertain, talk about your day over dinner, the place you probably make the most memories. This was important for us to produce an atmosphere we would love to spend time in for years to come. Today we are giving you a little peek of what these rooms will soon look like. We can’t wait to show you the final product! Till then, we will share and document the process through our Instagram Story.

Let’s start with Jacquelyn’s Inspiration!

When we closed escrow on our new home earlier this year I was beyond thrilled but totally not prepared for all of the big decisions I was going to have to make.  We decided to redo our kitchen before moving into the house because we didn’t want to deal with all the mess while in there. We are also taking out a wall, which is a whole other story!

I’ve been pinning ideas for my kitchen for years, but when the time came to design my own, it was very daunting. My husband has had to bug me to make decisions or even go look at things; I think I was a little apprehensive about making such permanent decisions. Plus, I’m so busy with my day too, I guess I was worried about adding more to my plate.

At first, I wanted to go in the direction of doing more modern beach wood cabinets. I still love the idea and look, but ultimately a few things changed my mind. One, I was worried I would get sick of them and they would just be a fad. Two, they aren’t in stock and would take 8-10 weeks to deliver, this isn’t a huge deal but would slow down our moving process quite a bit. And three, I was worried they wouldn’t match the wood flooring we are doing, and once everything was installed, I would feel regretful.

Ultimately I decided on classic white cabinets, they’ll never go out of style, and my kitchen will always look nice and bright! Plus, they are in stock which is a huge factor! Haha! We are also doing a large island with leather bar stools. The island will be a granite with a Carrera marble look, and the countertops will be granite with a dark cement look. We plan on doing a white glossy subway tile backsplash and a Portuguese inspired tile behind the stove.

The main elements we love are clean white with some natural wood and blue Portuguese tile.  I’m really hoping it all comes together well and my vision works. It’s exciting and scary all at once, and I can’t wait to share the outcome with you!

Now for Abby’s Inspiration!

We are moving into a division in Rocklin, Ca that is called Whitney Ranch. This procedure is a tad bit different than buying a house already built, and even building a custom home on your terms. How it works is we picked the style of home from three different options. It ranges from classic to the Spanish style- which we picked. Inside the home, you already have the layout designed. It is your job to pick out all the design elements of the home in their design centers. We haven’t gotten to that part of the process yet, and I do have to say I’m a bit nervous if I’m speaking honestly. What if they don’t have the precise tile I want? Or what if I want the built in to go here and not there? It is so much to think about, and you want everything to be perfect. I mean this is probably one of the only times, well pretty much the only time that I will be able to design my home from top to bottom. March is when we start the process, so till then, I’m gathering all my ideas together.

The kitchen. The most important room in our home for our family. It is where we spend the majority of our time with each other. The kids are at the age where they have homework, so we are always at the kitchen table, soon to be island doing our homework. I love to cook dinner with them and have them hanging out near me. We always sit down together for dinner and take turns talking about our day. If one of us isn’t there and able to speak on the phone, we FaceTime them to include them. It’s something we have been able to keep going with my husband already up in Sacramento.

SO what is this kitchen going to be? For sure, I know that we will have all white walls. No doubt there. I didn’t want to do straight white cabinets cause that would just be too much white for me. We love the look of a cabinet with a little hint of grayish green in it. My husband was shocked when I showed him the color. I don’t actually play with any other colors in the house besides black and white. But this pop of color will be a great contrast to the rattan that I want to carry thru the house. I’m so in love with rattan. We will have rattan lighting above the dinner table and perhaps above the kitchen island. That is still out for debate. My husband isn’t a huge fan, so I have to pick and choose my battles. Shouldn’t he just say, “Do whatever you want love?” In a dream world, I suppose. Ha!

With the cabinets an off color, and white walls, we are going simple with the backsplash, a beautiful clean subway tile. The island will be a white stone top with hints of gray to bring out the cabinet color. We are doing light floors this time around. At our old home, we did a very dark color, and we didn’t like it at all. Once the kids and the pets were around, it was dust city. You could see everything, and I was finding myself sweeping at least three times a day. I’m excited to get some light blonde wood tile in there. We saw this wood like tile at one of the model homes, and it was durable, clean, and requires less maintenance than dark hardwood floors. Lastly, adding wooden elements into the mix with open shelving, and areas to display all my glassware and dishes. I have collected quite a lot through these years with the blog content. Don’t forget the bright colored runner that will make its way into the kitchen as well for that fun pop of color. I have been looking for the perfect one these days, quite the challenge to find it. I know she is out there somewhere!

What do you guys think? We would love to hear your thoughts!

xx

What’s in your makeup bag?

A makeup bag, a place where all of your must-have beauty products and daily items like that coconut oil that you can’t live without, comingle. And if you ask me, the contents of one’s bag can tell you a lot about its owner. Are you a simple no fuss person? Lipstick hoarder? Or the all natural beauty product loving gal like myself? We thought we would give you a peek inside our makeup bags that we carry around everyday.

It all starts with the makeup bag itself. Always on the hunt for that one perfect bag to add to the collection, I discovered Lovestitch on Instagram. I was initially looking for a weekender bag for my sister’s bachelorette party. The one I currently owned was probably five years old and desperately needed to be replaced. While shopping their Instagram feed I saw some cool boho inspired cosmetics bags, and it was love at first sight. This is where our love story begins with Lovestich’s line, an understated boho feel and that California vibe we love so much.

You can shop each of our bags below too!

Let’s start with me!!!

Photos by Little Meg

All my goodies are packed away in the moody Venezia Makeup Bag. Soft and beautifully embroidered, this origami make up bag with beaded pom-pom zipper detail is too cute to not have a place on top of my vanity. Usually, I will store it in a cabinet, but not this baby. For the past couple years, I have been trying only to buy all natural products that aren’t filled with anything I can’t pronounce. But I do have some true and tried products that aren’t natural that I can’t live without. On an everyday basis, I only wear mascara and loose powder following my daily skincare routine. My bag is a mixed collection of my favorite items for every day.

Every morning, I start my day with the Mario Badescu Facial Spray, and Kapuluan Coconut Oil to give my skin a little pick me up, and nourishment from the raw cold-pressed coconut oil. Followed by Sun Project Shimmer Sun Essence Lotion to add a natural glow to skin while protecting from the powers of the sun with this SPF 30 sunscreen. It is so soft! I just love it! Lastly, a spritz of the best smelling perfume out there. If you love coconut; you will be smitten over the Lait De Coco spray.

This mama spends maybe 5 minutes on her hair in the morning. You will either see me with a top knot my go-to look or in a hat. House of Intuition, Hair Mystics Harmony Spray is a sea salt spray I use that is made with naturally refreshing fragrances + essential oils to condition and hydrate my hair.

On hand ALWAYS, is the Howard’s Guava candy. I’m one big guava freak, and these give me my daily fix.

I love this Taksumi Detox Deodorant in the travel size. Whenever I’m feeling under the weather, I apply this bamboo charcoal deodorant a couple of times a day.

I always carry my calm essential oil blend with me in case I need it throughout the day, and lately that has been a lot! We are going to be sharing more about essential oils soon, and I’m so excited about it! As well, I pack a lip and skin mask just in case I’m feeling extra dry. We have been traveling a lot lately back and forth from Sacremento, and these have come in handy. Last but not least, Milk Makeup Balm in Babe and Pure Paw Paw Ointment for dry, cracked lips, and cuts. I use Pure Paw Paw on the kids too, and it helps instantly. It’s one of my favorite products that I can’t live without.

On to What’s in Leah’s makeup bag…

Photos by Megan Welker

My favorite Lovestitch bag is the Loa make up bag.  I like it because it’s a long tube-like bag that will fit longer brushes or makeup palates that I sometimes tote along.  Especially when we are doing events, and we show up early and grungy, then have to put on our game faces for the main event.  But what I take with me every day is different.

Most of what you will see in my bag is by Honest Beauty.  I’m pretty addicted to it since I rarely have time to myself these days.  All I have to do is log onto the website every month, and three new makeup pieces are shipped to me for $50!! Deal…right??!!  So I never have to make that trip to the mall for makeup, it’s super convenient right now.  And if I don’t like something, the returns are easy, and the customer service is good.  No complaints here!  So above is the concealer you can find here.  I always need concealer on hand for sure.

One thing I never leave the house without is Kiehl’s Creme de Corps.  The best hand lotion everrrrrr!!!  Especially in the winter time.  The mascara is good, comes with a primer, which I like and easy for those 2 seconds per eye mascara jobs on a busy day.  It’s also not a pain to take off every night; it’s perfect for everyday use.  Since I don’t wear a lot of makeup every day, sometimes l like a bold lip with some light mascara to do the job.  You can find this pretty bright gloss here.  It goes on pretty natural, don’t let the rich color here fool you.

Always need a sheer good gloss you can find this one here.

And last but not least my creme foundation you can find here.  It’s thick enough to even out my skin, and hide my lovely sun spots, but yet thin enough for everyday use…if that makes sense, haha!  I know you get it!

Last, but certainly not least!

Jacquelyn and her set of essential goodies she can’t live without!

Photos by Ariane Moshayedi

I have to say; I’m not the most beauty conscious or oriented girl.  Although, I should probably change that as I get older because these wrinkles aren’t getting any better, haha!  But there are a few essentials that I always use and have to have around.  They are my everyday items that I usually don’t leave home without!

Aquaphor – Have you ever seen the movie My Big Fat Greek Wedding where they use Windex for everything?  Well, that’s how I am about Aquaphor!  Oh, you have a cut?  Use Aquaphor.  Oh, your nose is red from having a cold?  Use Aquaphor.  You have a rash?  Use Aquaphor.  You get my point.  I use it a lot for a chapstick and just always love having it handy, you know because I would die without it :)

C.O. Bigelow Rose Salve – My mom puts this lip balm in my stocking every year, and I use it all the time, and it will last me a full year!  I love the soft pink tint it gives to my lips, and it keeps them moisturized and shiny without being sticky.  It’s definitely one of my go-to items I always have to have, these big lips gotta stay hydrated or else they get majorly chapped!

Honest Beauty Mascara & Lipgloss – So Leah introduced me to the Honest Beauty product line – do you see a pattern here?  I can’t find any beauty products myself because I’m useless in this department, haha.  But seriously, I fell in love with these products the minute I tried them.  For one thing, you can order everything online, and it’s delivered straight to your door quickly.  The products are not tested on animals and don’t have parabens, paraffin, silicones, sodium lauryl sulfates, mineral oil, or synthetic fragrances- you know, the bad stuff. I was on the hunt for a new mascara- I had used Dior Show for years, but I was so sick of how long it took me to get it off at the end of the day. I love how Honest is effective and works but also comes off easily at the end of the day.

And their lipgloss colors are so pretty! I am currently obsessed with Dreamy Kiss and Generous Kiss. I’ll be trying more of their products soon!

Sun Bum Sunscreen Stick – So this is something my Nanny introduced me to!  I love Sun Bum products because they work and (mainly) because of the smell.  I find myself buying most of my beauty products because of the smell including hair, lotion, lip gloss, you name it.  But this particular item is one that I love b/c it’s perfect for kids and when I’m on the go.  It’s small, so it fits into my makeup bag, it would even fit in my pocket!  And my son Court has loved using this since he was 1!  He loves putting it on his face even, and we all know the struggle of putting sunscreen on kids!  It’s like trying to wrestle an alligator, so when you have something that they don’t mind putting on and are even willing to do it themselves?!  Winning….

Miss Marisa Oil – This has been one of my favorite scents for around ten years now!  It basically smells like summer and the beach, and who doesn’t love that?!  It reminds me of warm days in the sun with some sweetness to it.  I love rubbing a little bit on my wrists, and I’m good to go!  I have never gotten sick of this scent, and I don’t think I ever will!

Oribe Dry Texturizing Spray– Ok, so this stuff I can’t live without! Whenever I have a day where I don’t feel like washing my hair- which can be a lot these days because duh, mom life- I just spray this magical stuff on my hair and voila! It looks even better than the days I actually wash my and do it! Did I mention the smell?!? Gah, I love it… So if you’re like me and barely get 5 minutes to yourself for such extravagant things like a shower, then this is for you :)

Davines OI Hand Balm – I love keeping my hands moisturized and soft, but I hate the feeling of them being greasy.  This hand balm gives me exactly what I want.  Soft hands with no slick and yucky grease.  I also love the smell to it; it just smells clean if that makes sense… There I go with my smells again!  Speaking of smells, Davines has my favorite hair spray which also smells so yummy!

Goody Elastic Hair Ties – Do I even need to say anything?!  I love these because, well, I’m a girl, haha!  I can’t leave home without a hair tie; you never know when you need them!  They are usually on my wrist which is a HUGE pet peeve for any photographer you’ll ever meet, so I’ve gotten used to keeping them in my bag.  I usually use two at a time, I’m not sure why, but my hair just feels more secure and better when I do.  These are the ultimate everyday essential for me!!!  Can’t live without them!

NARS Laguna Bronzing Powder & Eco Tools Brush – I have to have bronzer, like every day… I feel naked without it!  California girl problems, but I love having some color on my face and NARS has been my favorite for a while now.  I just got into this brush line as well; it’s super soft to the face which I love.

SoCozy Products

Hey, Guys! Abby here, I have to tell you about one of my new favorite products for the littles that I discovered. I’m always on the look out for bath products that will accommodate my kid’s needs. Jett, my 4-year-old is super sensitive to bath products. He will often get a rash or hives that leave him with discomfort through the night. Alongside his chronic croup and asthma, we have to be careful with what we use on him. Poor bubba. I have to give it to him, though, he is always smiling and being silly even when he doesn’t feel well. It sure makes this mama feel a little bit better, but it breaks my heart he isn’t 100% healthy.

The other day I was at my solitude of peace, Target, getting something I “needed.” I remembered while aimlessly walking through the aisles that I needed to try another bath product for Jett. I immediately was drawn to a colorful bath product called SoCozy. I read the label and discovered that it has safe ingredients. No nasties; just good, clean, honest formulations with ingredients that perform at the highest level. Safe and effective, and completely non-toxic. Made without parabens, formaldehyde, sulfates, phthalates, synthetic color, and propylene glycol. Free of alcohol, gluten, wheat, peanuts and tree nuts was huge for me. So here we go.

Two months later, and we have had no rashes, hives, discomfort, struggles for bedtime cause we just itch so much. We laugh in our family because Jett always says I want to take a cozy bath tonight. Who knew in the end, the product that would work for this little man is called SoCozy. We use the Cinch 3 in1, Cinch Detangler, and Behave Styling Cream. In addition to Jett’s sensitive needs, we have our sassy 6-year old Dylan who needs one strong detangler to get through her wild locks. SoCozy detangler is the lion tamer we were looking for, and she can do it herself. Winner! One less thing for me to tackle at the end of the night.

Dear SoCozy,

I’m beyond grateful for your dedication in creating a product is uber safe for little ones and remaining super cool and smelling amazing at the same time. Most of all, you have helped this mama get through bathtime that was once filled with tears and screams to laughs and happy babies.

xx

One Happy Mama

You can find SoCozy at Target, CVS, and Walgreens!

Beijos Finds The Perfect Flannel

So we are in the thick of it y’all!!  This little thing we like to call Winter…burrrr.  And I know, I know we are spoiled in So Cal….we don’t really get them.  But I have to say this year it’s been cold for us.  Which is so great!!  We are getting a feel of some seasons this year with some brisk wind and some rain, hey we’ll take it!!  Anyway, with that said, we found the perfect flannel for those days we want to feel extra cozy but stylish ya know!?  It really wasn’t hard for us to decide since this company has some great styles…we went with Rails!  The fabric is so soft, the knit literally feels like pajamas!! I mean who wouldn’t want to cozy up in it all day everyday??  So here we are looking as cute as we can in our favorite flannels by Rails

Jacquelyn chose the classic Hunter style in Black Royal you can find here.  It’s an ultra soft button down with  with one chest pocket.

Pictures of Jacquelyn by Megan Welker

You will soon find out we are apparently a black and white crew because… what can we say we love the monochromatic neurtrals!

I went with a dress, because hey they are easy and I LOVE easy dressing!!  The Bianca in Vanilla Indigo you can find here.  It’s an ultra soft long sleeve button down shirtdress with a single chest pocket.

Abby went edgy showing us how to accessorize this bad boy in a couple different ways…one with her beanie and shades and the other wrapping it around her waste.  Super grunge cute!!

Abby also chose the Hunter in Ebony/Ivory Buffalo you can find here.

Pictures of Abby by Julie Cahill

We love Rails because of it’s super relaxed Cali vibe, but also it’s sophistication.  The quality guys, I can’t say enough about it…super legit with the perfect combination of comfort and tailoring!

If you don’t have a rails flannel…you need one, just sayin’ haha! Happy Shopping!!

xx Leah
