Back to School with Essential Oils

You all might not know, but I’m a big believer in essential oils. Those that do know, probably call me the crazy oil lady behind my back, which I’m cool with. My love for oils started a couple of years ago, and my essential oil game became pretty serious about a year ago. My son, Jett gets chronic croup since he was born. In the beginning, not having a lot of knowledge about croup, we gave him what the doctor advised us each time. Well, you could only imagine how many steroids that little man received. Finally, about a year ago, I had enough and did some research on my own. Turns out steroids, are horrible for you, shocker. Now, of course, they helped him, there is no debate in that. But I didn’t want to give him them forever. This is where essential oils came in. Since that day, I can happily say we have had not to give him one steroid treatment since. On that very day, I changed our families lifestyle and started to use all natural, non-toxic, organic, granola, call it what you want, products in every part of our life.

With school approaching, I had to get my weaponry of essential oils ready for action. I love to do roller and diffuser blends for both my kids and myself. For back to school, I wanted to create some blends that will help all of us get thru the school year, and especially those 1st-day jitters. We are at a new school this year, and I think we all are pretty nervous about that. 

With the help from Melody, my essential oil guru, she came up with some excellent blends for back to school. Melody has helped me with knowledge of oils for a couple of months now, and she is the best! You might remember we did a feature on this super mom this past year. Before we go thru all my favorite back to school blends, I have to gush about my favorite diffuser and rollers. Beat the heat with this Coconut Lime Passion Fruit Popsicle

We are in full swing of summer, and this heat here in my area is no joke. I mean I have been places during summer where it reaches 110, but every day… my goodness! This week we have another heat wave, so the kids and I are staying cool by making popsicles and hanging out by the pool. With both kids home for summer and camps here and there, I have to have some activities to keep them happy, and of course, keep me sane. This week we made these coconut lime passion fruit popsicles. The reason behind those ingredients you ask? Just ones that I know my kids will eat, always in my fruit basket, and that are healthy with all those natural ingredients. Plus, I was feeling a little bit tropical, but when am I not? I promise these taste amazing, enjoy!

Coconut Lime Passion Fruit Popsicles

I n g r e d i e n t s
makes: 5 popsicles

1 cup cubed pineapple (grill for extra sweetness)
 fresh juice from 1/2 lime
1/2 can of coconut milk, the thick part
1/2 cup passion fruit or 2 passion fruits
One teaspoon Manuka Honey (if needed for sweetness)

D i r e c t i o n s 

Blend everything together, and if you are using the passion fruit seeds stir in at the end. Now, I didn’t use the passion fruit seeds this time, cause the kids think they look funny, so I used fresh juice.  Taste before adding to molds, if you need more sweetness add some honey. Pour the mixture into the popsicle molds. Add the popsicle sticks and put those babies in the freezer overnight or at least for 5-6 hours. Finally, you can enjoy!

Getting my Body Back with Onzie after Baby Number Two

So, Summer is basically here and swimsuit season is upon us….  Normally I would have started to think about my bikini body a little earlier than this, but better late then never!!  So this is me getting my body back after baby number two! 

I had Cruz late August last year and to be honest, my workout time has been pretty non existent.  With two little ones, a business and a husband who is on call 24/7 for his job it’s really hard to find the time.  But I have decided I need to make the time, not just for looking better, but to be healthy and for my sanity!

I recently teamed up with Onzie, the cutest activewear brand that I have fallen in love with.  They specialize in yoga apparel which is something that I am trying to focus on after Cruz.  To be honest, yoga isn’t my strong suit.  I’m more of a running/dripping sweat kind of girl.  

Unfortunately, with both of my pregnancies I suffered from severe back pain, more so with Cruz.  I would go to physical therapy for it weekly and I continue to have pain sometimes 9 months after.  Stretching my body was something I wanted to focus on after Cruz and emphasize before really working to get my body back in shape.

Stretching and yoga are things I like to do (if I can) right in the morning when I wake up.  This gets my back in line after sleeping all night and starts my day off right.  Luckily most of these stretches can also incorporate baby, or at least entertain him!  

I don’t know about you, but my 9 month old is busy busy!!  He is at the stage where he is crawling all over and walking along everything.  If he’s in his pack and play longer than 5-10 minutes he’s crying to be out.  Cruz is Mr. Curious and wants to be included in what everyone else is doing.

To let him be included I’ll do the Superman with him on my legs or have him sit on my belly while I do certain stretches.  I’ll also lay out his toys while I do more complicated things, but he tends to think what I’m doing is more interesting.  Who can blame him?  Some of these yoga poses are pretty silly!

One of the things I love about my gear from Onzie is how comfortable it is.  I would be lying if I said I only wore these for workouts…. Let’s be honest, this is basically my mom uniform.  I wear these Stunner Capri Pants in Mint Heather constantly.  They are the perfect length and don’t cut into my tummy fat – because that’s definitely there now after two kids!!  Work in progress, ok?

I also love this cute Chic Bra in Purple Haze.  It’s the perfect amount of support for yoga or day to day stuff, however I wouldn’t wear it for anything extreme.  Since the back detail is so fun I had to get their Twist Back Top in White, nice and comfy but shows off the bra!

Having kids and getting older is hard.  I realize that my body will probably not look the same as it did 10 years ago.  Things are not quite as toned in places I’d like them to be.  But that doesn’t mean I don’t want to take care of it!  I have always been a very active person, playing multiple sports growing up and really into working out in my 20’s/30’s.  It’s something I want to continue for as long as I can. 

Like I said, Summer is coming up and I want to feel comfortable wearing my bikini again, so that is my goal.  I knew that getting my body back after baby number two wouldn’t be easy, but I’m still gonna give it my best shot!  

Ultimately I have two beautiful boys and working out is a way for me to not just look good, but feel good.  I am actually really lucky and have already lost most of my baby weight.  Let’s just put it this way, I look good with clothes on, it’s without that is a bit different.  You moms out there will know exactly what I mean.  

I would ideally like to lose 10 more lbs by the end of the Summer, but I’d be happy with 5.  Mostly I’d be happy with just toning more and feeling more confident in that damn bikini!!  What are some of your favorite work outs and ways to stay fit and balance a busy schedule with kids?  I’d love any tips from our readers!!

Self Care – Massage for the Busy Mom

Earlier this year I spoke about Self Care and how I really want to make it one of my resolutions for 2017.  Well, lucky me, one of my dearest friends Melody has gone into the field of therapeutic massage with her own business, HERE & NOW Massage.  She is sharing tons of amazing information today on why it’s so important.  Best part of all?!  Melody is offering $10 off your first session if you mention BEIJOS, so keep reading!!  Melody is so well versed in the benefits of massage, it was really eye opening for me to hear what she had to say.  

As a busy work from home Mom – which with a toddler and baby is nearly impossible somedays – a massage sounds AMAZING, but also unrealistic.  I barely have the time to wash my hair, how will I have the time for that?!  But after talking to Melody and learning more about the importance of massage I’ve decided it definitely needs to be added to my “self care list”.  

Being a mother is one of the most selfless jobs out there.  You are constantly putting yourself last and your kids (and anyone else around) first.  With Mother’s Day fast approaching, I can’t think of anything else better than to gift a relaxing HERE & NOW.  Just gifting an hour or so of quiet calmness is basically like gifting a million dollars to a Mom!  Because I literally can’t think of anyone who deserves a massage more than a Mom.

Melody came over to my house recently to give me a massage.  Yes, she does at home massages which is a total game changer!!!  If I’m being completely honest, it’s hard for me to go get a hair cut or even my nails done.  When you’re that busy it just seems like a chore at times to go get that done.  However, as soon as I’m there and I can relax, I love it… It’s just getting there and making the plans to do so that is tough.  But with how easy Melody made it for me, how could I say no?!

So let’s check in with Melody and hear more about why massage is such an important self care concept…

First of all, let me introduce my beautiful friend Melody!

HELLO! My name is Melody and I am a Massage Therapist in Orange County, California. After 10 years in the corporate world of public relations and marketing, I felt compelled to make a change in order to combine my love of working with people and my passion for holistic wellness.

Why is self-care and massage important for women?

Whether you’re a momma (new or experienced), an executive, a business owner, a mentor, a friend (and the list goes on), it’s likely you have many responsibilities in your day-to-day life and it’s also likely you don’t put yourself on your “to-do” list. With the laundry list of things that need to get done around the house, with the kids and school, at work, etc., putting time aside for yourself is easier said than done. By the time your day is over, you’re wiped out and you just want to catch up on some much needed z’s.

So why should you incorporate self-care and massage into your daily/weekly/monthly routine? If you don’t start now it won’t be long before you’re battered from exhaustion (if you’re not already) and operating in a mental fog (sound familiar?) where it’s hard to make it through the day without forgetting important appointments, getting through your tasks, and truly being there (in body, mind and spirit) for the ones you love. With the (most) important role you have as a mom, putting yourself first, at least some of the time, is the only way you’re going to be at your best and massage therapy is one of the easiest ways to get there! Massage not only incorporates relaxation of your body and mind but also has some serious health benefits that you probably could benefit from.

What are the benefits of massage?

There are so many benefits to massage therapy that it’s hard to list just a few but let’s start with what a mom needs most – some serious (and solo) R&R! No kids, no hubbie, no work, no distractions (are you excited yet?). Beyond just the obvious tranquility and rest you’ll be giving your body and mind, the list of health benefits of massage is even more impressive and perfectly suited for the new/busy/working momma:

 Manage Anxiety & Depression – Motherhood is the greatest undertaking for most women. It comes with highs and lows, the good and the bad, the pretty and the ugly. It’s not easy! If you’re suffering from postpartum, talk to your doctor about how massage therapy could help you.

Ease Pain – Tight shoulders, neck tension and low back pain sound familiar? Whether you’re breast feeding, carrying around your toddler or just dealing with day-to-day stresses, pain is probably second nature at this point. It shouldn’t be.

Hormone Regulation/Balance –  Are your hormones out of whack? If you’ve just had a baby it’s likely they’re all over the place with estrogen and progesterone hormone levels changing and prolactin and oxytocin hormone levels rising to facilitate breastfeeding. Those with decreased libido, fatigue, migraines, mood changes, irregular periods, hot flashes, and poor focus can also benefit greatly from balancing hormones.

Improve Sleep – Okay fine, this one is not entirely up to you if you have a newborn or if you’re sleep training but at the end of the day, you need your z’s, deep (REM) sleep. Or maybe there is so much stress in your life that you’re suffering from insomnia. Bottom line, you can’t afford lousy sleep!

Boost Immunity: Got germs? Massage therapy increases the activity level of the body’s white blood cells that work to combat viruses. Because who has time for the flu?

Promote a Better Sense of Well-Being – We all need a break every now and then. Time to recharge, rejuvenate, refresh and get centered. Not only will you feel relaxed but you’ll also feel re-energized and ready to take on life even better than before.

The list is long but here are a few more things massage therapy may also help with: digestive disorders; tension headaches; soft tissue strains; circulation; reducing blood pressure; sciatica, chronic pain; Carpal Tunnel Syndrome; rheumatoid arthritis pain; fibromyalgia; chemotherapy-related nausea..

How do I maximize my in-home massage experience?

BEFORE: Get someone to watch your kid(s). Give yourself two hours for a 60 minute massage – 30 minutes to get ready and relax pre-massage and 30 minutes post-massage to shower, dress and return (slowly) back to your normal routine. Before your massage, pick a quiet room in your house, take a hot shower, light some candles or a diffuser with essential oils and put on your favorite soothing music.

DURING: R-E-L-A-X. It might not be easy but this is YOU-time. No kids, no housework, no co-workers or cell phone…just YOU. Take deep breaths, focus on your body and the movements of your inhalations and exhalations and keep your mind in a neutral place. You want to stay in the preset, in the now.

AFTER: Hydrate. Hydrate. Hydrate. Massages are dehydrating and it’s important to replenish by drinking plenty of water. Fluids (and toxins) are pumped into your circulatory system, where it heads toward your kidneys eventually moving out of your system. The water provides your kidneys with the water they need to effectively eliminate waste and toxins.

Try to take it easy (again, easier said than done) the rest of the day, practice some breathing techniques if you get frustrated or if your mind starts to wander, and remind yourself of what good you did for yourself with the massage you had earlier.

What if I’ve never had a massage? What if I’m not comfortable with my post-baby body? What if I can’t relax?

First timer? No problem – there’s a first for everything. Your in-home massage therapist will come prepared with everything needed (table, sheets, oils, music) and will explain the entire process (basically you lay down and relax while the therapist does all the work). This is your time, you’re in a safe place and there is nothing for you to worry about. Leave the stresses and your self-judgements at the door, and take this time to put your mind at ease. Still not able to relax? Take deep, long breaths, imagine yourself on your dream vacation and anytime your mind starts to wander, bring it back to your body and the present moment. What if I don’t have time?

MAKE THE TIME! Do I need to say it again? MAKE. THE. TIME. That’s right, you need it, you deserve it and you’ve earned it. The best part of an in-home massage is that you don’t have to leave the house – no bags to pack, traffic to fight, parking to find, or extra time to plan around. Let’s face it, we don’t all have the funds to enjoy what some may consider a “luxury”, but at the end of the day, self-care is crucial for you to be the best mom to your children, partner to your spouse, employee to your boss, friend to your girlfriends, daughter, sister, boss… So whether you’re getting a massage, making it to your favorite yoga class, taking a quick nap, getting a mani/pedi, or even indulging in 60 (uninterrupted) minutes of the latest episode of The Bachelor, MAKE TIME FOR YOU.

How often should I be receiving massages?

Brush aside any thoughts that massage is only a feel-good way to indulge or pamper yourself. To the contrary, massage can be a powerful tool to help you take charge of your health and well-being, it be a specific health condition or you’re simply looking for a stress reliever. Whether you have the financial means to get weekly massages or just one from time to time, the benefits you’ll receive will make a huge impact on the quality of your life.

A Mother of Two’s take on the Rejuvenation Cleanse from Project Juice

Well, Cruz is now 6 months old and I am still finding the balance to it all.  Having two kids is far different than one and the time for myself has basically flown out the window.  Gone are the days of getting back in shape right after baby, which is something I feel constant guilt about.  I have always been an active person, I love to run and work out, yes, I actually LOVE to run!  But since Cruz has come into the mix it’s hard to find the time for things like exercise.

Not only is it hard to find the time, there is also the guilt factor.  Not wanting to leave our babies or miss out on anything can be a big part of it all.  Just today I was at the park with my brood, Court, Cruz and our dog Dolly and I saw this gorgeous girl running looking amazing.  Not gonna lie, I was a tad bit jealous, I wouldn’t change my life for the world but I do miss the ability to cater to my own needs more.  

I’m also very grateful that I have lost most of my baby weight, but there is still that little bit left…  That little bit that is so hard to get rid of…  So I decided I needed a good kick start which lead me to Project Juice.  We’ve shared our love for Project Juice before and I knew to turn to them for something like this.  I decided to try their brand new Rejuvenation Cleanse.  Which fit well because that was my goal, to feel REJUVENATED!

So how did the cleanse go?  Well to be honest starting one made me nervous.  I haven’t cleansed since before the babies and most days lately I’m just eating left over buttered pasta – you other mom’s can relate!  So keeping on track worried me, but like I said, the convenience of it all really helped.  I was also a little worried about liking the juices, especially the “Black Magic”, I mean drinking something black like that just scared me!  But it ended up being one of my favorite ones!  I was also worried about being hungry… But adding in the soups really helped to keep me fulfilled.

 After the cleanse I felt a definite change, not to sound cheesy but I did feel rejuvenated!  Being a mom is hard and taking time for yourself is even harder.  It seems like you’re always pulled in different directions, someone needs attention, dinner needs to be made, lunches need to be packed, etc.  But doing this simple thing for myself and taking care of my health felt so good.  Not only did my body feel good but my mind did as well.
