Self Care – Massage for the Busy Mom

Earlier this year I spoke about Self Care and how I really want to make it one of my resolutions for 2017.  Well, lucky me, one of my dearest friends Melody has gone into the field of therapeutic massage with her own business, HERE & NOW Massage.  She is sharing tons of amazing information today on why it’s so important.  Best part of all?!  Melody is offering $10 off your first session if you mention BEIJOS, so keep reading!!  Melody is so well versed in the benefits of massage, it was really eye opening for me to hear what she had to say.

As a busy work from home Mom – which with a toddler and baby is nearly impossible somedays – a massage sounds AMAZING, but also unrealistic.  I barely have the time to wash my hair, how will I have the time for that?!  But after talking to Melody and learning more about the importance of massage I’ve decided it definitely needs to be added to my “self care list”.

Being a mother is one of the most selfless jobs out there.  You are constantly putting yourself last and your kids (and anyone else around) first.  With Mother’s Day fast approaching, I can’t think of anything else better than to gift a relaxing HERE & NOW.  Just gifting an hour or so of quiet calmness is basically like gifting a million dollars to a Mom!  Because I literally can’t think of anyone who deserves a massage more than a Mom.

Melody came over to my house recently to give me a massage.  Yes, she does at home massages which is a total game changer!!!  If I’m being completely honest, it’s hard for me to go get a hair cut or even my nails done.  When you’re that busy it just seems like a chore at times to go get that done.  However, as soon as I’m there and I can relax, I love it… It’s just getting there and making the plans to do so that is tough.  But with how easy Melody made it for me, how could I say no?!

So let’s check in with Melody and hear more about why massage is such an important self care concept…

First of all, let me introduce my beautiful friend Melody!

HELLO! My name is Melody and I am a Massage Therapist in Orange County, California. After 10 years in the corporate world of public relations and marketing, I felt compelled to make a change in order to combine my love of working with people and my passion for holistic wellness.

In my pursuit of becoming a Holistic Health Practitioner, I graduated from California College of Physical Arts as a Certified Massage Practitioner and began my business HERE & NOW shortly thereafter, offering specialized bodywork, mindful wellness and a holistic approach to better health.

Working with a variety of clients ranging from individuals looking for relaxation to those working to overcome injuries through a therapeutic massage approach, I specialize in an integrative blend of Swedish and Therapeutic practices to provide pain relief, release of muscle tension, stress reduction, improved circulation and more.

Becoming a massage therapist has brought me to a place of where I am able to practice living in the moment – in the HERE & NOW – by focusing on and helping others in body, mind and spirit through bodywork, wellness and better health.

Why is self-care and massage important for women?

Whether you’re a momma (new or experienced), an executive, a business owner, a mentor, a friend (and the list goes on), it’s likely you have many responsibilities in your day-to-day life and it’s also likely you don’t put yourself on your “to-do” list. With the laundry list of things that need to get done around the house, with the kids and school, at work, etc., putting time aside for yourself is easier said than done. By the time your day is over, you’re wiped out and you just want to catch up on some much needed z’s.

So why should you incorporate self-care and massage into your daily/weekly/monthly routine? If you don’t start now it won’t be long before you’re battered from exhaustion (if you’re not already) and operating in a mental fog (sound familiar?) where it’s hard to make it through the day without forgetting important appointments, getting through your tasks, and truly being there (in body, mind and spirit) for the ones you love. With the (most) important role you have as a mom, putting yourself first, at least some of the time, is the only way you’re going to be at your best and massage therapy is one of the easiest ways to get there! Massage not only incorporates relaxation of your body and mind but also has some serious health benefits that you probably could benefit from.

What are the benefits of massage?

There are so many benefits to massage therapy that it’s hard to list just a few but let’s start with what a mom needs most – some serious (and solo) R&R! No kids, no hubbie, no work, no distractions (are you excited yet?). Beyond just the obvious tranquility and rest you’ll be giving your body and mind, the list of health benefits of massage is even more impressive and perfectly suited for the new/busy/working momma:

Manage Anxiety & Depression – Motherhood is the greatest undertaking for most women. It comes with highs and lows, the good and the bad, the pretty and the ugly. It’s not easy! If you’re suffering from postpartum, talk to your doctor about how massage therapy could help you.

Ease Pain – Tight shoulders, neck tension and low back pain sound familiar? Whether you’re breast feeding, carrying around your toddler or just dealing with day-to-day stresses, pain is probably second nature at this point. It shouldn’t be.

Hormone Regulation/Balance –  Are your hormones out of whack? If you’ve just had a baby it’s likely they’re all over the place with estrogen and progesterone hormone levels changing and prolactin and oxytocin hormone levels rising to facilitate breastfeeding. Those with decreased libido, fatigue, migraines, mood changes, irregular periods, hot flashes, and poor focus can also benefit greatly from balancing hormones.

Improve Sleep – Okay fine, this one is not entirely up to you if you have a newborn or if you’re sleep training but at the end of the day, you need your z’s, deep (REM) sleep. Or maybe there is so much stress in your life that you’re suffering from insomnia. Bottom line, you can’t afford lousy sleep!

Boost Immunity: Got germs? Massage therapy increases the activity level of the body’s white blood cells that work to combat viruses. Because who has time for the flu?

Promote a Better Sense of Well-Being – We all need a break every now and then. Time to recharge, rejuvenate, refresh and get centered. Not only will you feel relaxed but you’ll also feel re-energized and ready to take on life even better than before.

The list is long but here are a few more things massage therapy may also help with: digestive disorders; tension headaches; soft tissue strains; circulation; reducing blood pressure; sciatica, chronic pain; Carpal Tunnel Syndrome; rheumatoid arthritis pain; fibromyalgia; chemotherapy-related nausea..

How do I maximize my in-home massage experience?

BEFORE: Get someone to watch your kid(s). Give yourself two hours for a 60 minute massage – 30 minutes to get ready and relax pre-massage and 30 minutes post-massage to shower, dress and return (slowly) back to your normal routine. Before your massage, pick a quiet room in your house, take a hot shower, light some candles or a diffuser with essential oils and put on your favorite soothing music.

DURING: R-E-L-A-X. It might not be easy but this is YOU-time. No kids, no housework, no co-workers or cell phone…just YOU. Take deep breaths, focus on your body and the movements of your inhalations and exhalations and keep your mind in a neutral place. You want to stay in the preset, in the now.

AFTER: Hydrate. Hydrate. Hydrate. Massages are dehydrating and it’s important to replenish by drinking plenty of water. Fluids (and toxins) are pumped into your circulatory system, where it heads toward your kidneys eventually moving out of your system. The water provides your kidneys with the water they need to effectively eliminate waste and toxins.

Try to take it easy (again, easier said than done) the rest of the day, practice some breathing techniques if you get frustrated or if your mind starts to wander, and remind yourself of what good you did for yourself with the massage you had earlier.

What if I’ve never had a massage? What if I’m not comfortable with my post-baby body? What if I can’t relax?

First timer? No problem – there’s a first for everything. Your in-home massage therapist will come prepared with everything needed (table, sheets, oils, music) and will explain the entire process (basically you lay down and relax while the therapist does all the work). This is your time, you’re in a safe place and there is nothing for you to worry about. Leave the stresses and your self-judgements at the door, and take this time to put your mind at ease. Still not able to relax? Take deep, long breaths, imagine yourself on your dream vacation and anytime your mind starts to wander, bring it back to your body and the present moment. Have more questions? Check out the frequently asked questions here: Here &  Now website.

What if I don’t have time?

MAKE THE TIME! Do I need to say it again? MAKE. THE. TIME. That’s right, you need it, you deserve it and you’ve earned it. The best part of an in-home massage is that you don’t have to leave the house – no bags to pack, traffic to fight, parking to find, or extra time to plan around. Let’s face it, we don’t all have the funds to enjoy what some may consider a “luxury”, but at the end of the day, self-care is crucial for you to be the best mom to your children, partner to your spouse, employee to your boss, friend to your girlfriends, daughter, sister, boss… So whether you’re getting a massage, making it to your favorite yoga class, taking a quick nap, getting a mani/pedi, or even indulging in 60 (uninterrupted) minutes of the latest episode of The Bachelor, MAKE TIME FOR YOU.

How often should I be receiving massages?

Brush aside any thoughts that massage is only a feel-good way to indulge or pamper yourself. To the contrary, massage can be a powerful tool to help you take charge of your health and well-being, it be a specific health condition or you’re simply looking for a stress reliever. Whether you have the financial means to get weekly massages or just one from time to time, the benefits you’ll receive will make a huge impact on the quality of your life.

In the Orange County area? Book your in-home massage with licensed massage therapist Melody Althaus, owner of Here & Now Massage | Wellness | Holistic Health.

Remember, if you mention BEIJOS you receive $10 off of your first session!!  So go treat yo’self or even gift a Mama you love with the best gift of all – some TLC!

ENJOY!!! And don’t forget to take care of your self!!! XX

A Mother of Two’s take on the Rejuvenation Cleanse from Project Juice

Well, Cruz is now 6 months old and I am still finding the balance to it all.  Having two kids is far different than one and the time for myself has basically flown out the window.  Gone are the days of getting back in shape right after baby, which is something I feel constant guilt about.  I have always been an active person, I love to run and work out, yes, I actually LOVE to run!  But since Cruz has come into the mix it’s hard to find the time for things like exercise.

Not only is it hard to find the time, there is also the guilt factor.  Not wanting to leave our babies or miss out on anything can be a big part of it all.  Just today I was at the park with my brood, Court, Cruz and our dog Dolly and I saw this gorgeous girl running looking amazing.  Not gonna lie, I was a tad bit jealous, I wouldn’t change my life for the world but I do miss the ability to cater to my own needs more.

I’m also very grateful that I have lost most of my baby weight, but there is still that little bit left…  That little bit that is so hard to get rid of…  So I decided I needed a good kick start which lead me to Project Juice.  We’ve shared our love for Project Juice before and I knew to turn to them for something like this.  I decided to try their brand new Rejuvenation Cleanse.  Which fit well because that was my goal, to feel REJUVENATED!

The Rejuvenation Cleanse is functionally designed to invigorate your system, facilitate a detox and leave you feeling refreshed!  Just what this tired mama needs!  It comes with your usual four cold pressed juices but they added two wellness shots and two delicious chef crafted soups.  The cleanse also includes a superfood trail mix and a cleansing tea.  I liked how it wasn’t too intense of a cleanse, it kept me satisfied and full through-out the day, especially since I’m still breastfeeding.

Project Juice made everything super easy for me by labeling exactly which bottles to drink at what point through-out the day.  So really, I didn’t have to think about it too much, which of course I loved!  The less work I have to do, the better!  Since I am a work from home mom, with two little ones with me most days, it was nice having the convenience of it all.  I could just grab a juice and head off to the park, and when we were home I could just pop a soup on the stove to heat up.  Easy peasy!

Project Juice also supplies an information card that tells you everything you need.  I referred to the card quite a bit and it was super helpful.  For example, they have tips, like advising you to always start your day with warm water and a big squeeze of organic lemon.  They also give you ideas for snacks in case you feel weak, things like 1/2 an avocado with lemon and cayenne – one of my yummy favorites!

So how did the cleanse go?  Well to be honest starting one made me nervous.  I haven’t cleansed since before the babies and most days lately I’m just eating left over buttered pasta – you other mom’s can relate!  So keeping on track worried me, but like I said, the convenience of it all really helped.  I was also a little worried about liking the juices, especially the “Black Magic”, I mean drinking something black like that just scared me!  But it ended up being one of my favorite ones!  I was also worried about being hungry… But adding in the soups really helped to keep me fulfilled.

After the cleanse I felt a definite change, not to sound cheesy but I did feel rejuvenated!  Being a mom is hard and taking time for yourself is even harder.  It seems like you’re always pulled in different directions, someone needs attention, dinner needs to be made, lunches need to be packed, etc.  But doing this simple thing for myself and taking care of my health felt so good.  Not only did my body feel good but my mind did as well.

Doing things for our self – self care, which we talked about earlier this year – is healthy for everyone.  For ourselves and for our families.  I find myself making healthier decisions since my cleanse and I’m excited to get back out and exercise.  It’s time to feel a little bit like my old self, a new improved self with two kiddos an amazing husband and an exciting career.  It’s ok if I don’t work out 5 times a week like I used to, but if I give myself a little bit of love and time every week I’ll be happy!

If you want to try out the Rejuvenation Cleanse yourself Project Juice has been kind enough to share the love!

You can save 10% with code BEIJOSREJUV on an order $100 or more till 3/31/17.

Spotlight: Obsessed With Essentials

This past holiday season I decided to take the plunge into the ever popular essential oils.  I have seen this little revolution happen all around me for the past 5 years and little by little it peaked my interest.  I never bought into it though until I started seeing for myself the incredible benefits that can be had from using these all natural resources.  Some of these stories include avoiding sickness altogether, most commonly the cold and flu virus, headaches, anxiety, allergies, receiving natural boosts energy, getting a good nights sleep and the list goes on!!  You mean I don’t have to medicate myself with over the counter drugs constantly when one of my family members or myself is experiencing these common ailments??  All natural did you say???  Ok I want to know more….and although I felt late in the game when I finally invested in this fabulous phenomenon, I felt the need to share all the knowledge that was at my fingertips.  This was all too good since we live in a world where we are constantly striving to use only the best to promote health and wellness for our loved ones.  It’s what it’s all about right??

All photos by the lovely Megan Welker

So like I said this past holiday season, I told the hubby I wanted some oils to jumpstart my collection.  He was all for it, so I went the guru herself.  She is a dear friend of ours here at Beijos and we recently visited her lovely home so she could educate us a little.  It’s the wonderful Melody Brandon, who also co- owns the ever popular  and yummy Sweet & Saucy Shop!! How does she have time for this being a bakery owner, a mama and investing her time into her newest passion with these essential oils?? Who knows…she’s what we call a super mom!! You need to follow her instagram feed over on Life on Loma to see this super mama in action.  Anyway, here is what she has to say…

How and when did you discover your connection with essential oils?
I started looking for more natural health solutions when I got pregnant with my daughter Blake about 5 years ago and started having to question why things like why best friend “Excedrin” weren’t allowed haha.  I always had grown up in a home that used modern medicine for everything and wasn’t really aware of all the side effects that it can have on you, so when it came time to prepare for having my own little one I quickly realized how helpless I felt and started to research natural health options.  I had never heard the words “essentials oils” until I was 28 years old and when I saw my sister in law using them on her kids and singing their praises I knew it was something I needed to look into more.  I found out that actually SO many people were using them and I made the jump and got my first kit with Doterra for a Christmas present and have been obsessed ever since!

How has this obsession affected your life and your family?
It has been the biggest blessing ever.  I rarely, if ever, have to go to the doctors office, pay co pays, worry about what to do when my kids are feeling sick, etc.  My son who is 2.5 years old has never even had to be on any type of over the counter medication…definitely a huge time and money saver!  They not only have helped with physical health issues but are amazing for mental health too.  I am a busy mom with two businesses and absolutely love using them daily for hormonal support, stress, energy, etc.  Helping my friends and family use essential oils has been such a joy too and now that I share my passion on my personal Instagram account I have even got to connect with people in other countries!  Getting a text, call or email from someone saying their children finally slept through the night, their allergies actually went away, they haven’t had the domino effect of sickness every month in their family, and on and on really does make me so happy to share my passion and love of essential oils with not only my family, but others as well!

Tell us more about these cute little roller bottles you make?
Well since I have an addiction for anything gold and I hadn’t found anything that I loved look wise for roller bottles and labels that didn’t break the bank I decided to make them myself.  I had Tina Yang from @missmultee custom write them, then get them printed at a local sign shop and then I adhere all of them myself…can we say labor of love haha.  I love spoiling anyone who wants to join this oil journey with me so they always get some for free and then can conveniently have them in their purse or bag so they can use their oils throughout the day.

Give a the recipe for a common blend…
One of my favorite daily perfume blends that not only smells amazing but is also great for anxiety, stress and mood is Balance and Wild Orange. It is so refreshing as well since all citrus oils smell so yummy! I do 10-20 of each oil in a 10 ml roller bottle and then fill up with fractionated coconut oil.  I apply it to my wrists, back of the neck, temples or behind the ears!  I also place these oils on diffuser jewelry when I wear them!

What is your most used blend?
One of my most used blends is my “sanity” blend aka my “hotmess blend” for when I feel stressed out and am losing it!
It is 5-7 drops of these 6 oils…
Console
Serenity
Balance
Clary Sage
Peace
Peppermint

What is your advice to the essential oil beginner?
I say the most important thing is to be plugged into a essential oil community that can help you learn, answer your questions at 12am when you are freaking out over what to do for a fever, and offer you lots of continuing education so that you actually use your essential oils and don’t let them sit in a box in your cupboard!  That is my I love our private Facebook group, Obsessed with Essentials, because I found that having a support group was the main thing lacking for the essential oil community at large and it really is the deal breaker in your essential oil journey I feel like!

What is the best kept secret about this oil revolution?
That there really is an oil for EVERYTHING!  No joke…from bug bites, to panic attacks, fevers, immune support or just a replacement for that toxic candle in your home, essential oils really are so versatile and once you start, you really can’t stop!  As far as a specific oil that is most underrated I would have to agree with my girlfriends Jesi Haack and Carissa Jowett and say that Vetiver oil is AMAZING and they wish they had known about it earlier!  The smell is so unique and earthy and both of them are addicted to diffusing it.  It is also the top oil for ADHD, great for anxiety, mood, and sleep among other things.

What is your favorite blend?
I absolutely love the “Anthro blend” for diffusing during the day in my house instead of candle. It is White Fir, Citrus Bliss, and Grapefruit!

Can you believe all of this amazing information???  Well it’s only a snippet so if you want to more and get plugged in with an essential oil community or watch a intro to essential oils webinar you can email Melody at obsessedwithessentials@gmail.com

So we can’t share this amazing info with out telling you about some other amazing things like making an all natural face toner!!

Beijos Bride- Bridal Diet Plan

Hello again! This is the bride to be Ally coming at you with the good, the bad and the ugly of wedding preparations. I think any bride would agree that looking good for your big day is at the top of your to-do list. When I got engaged, I knew that this would be a priority, and I thought it would be one of the easier items to check off my list, considering I am a certified personal trainer. Wrong!! What most people won’t tell you ladies is that Champagne becomes a food group during your wedding planning season. Also, I have done some dessert tastings, food tasting and general snacking while planning sessions. If only cheese and crackers and some champs could really be a quality meal, one could wish.

So here I am 6 weeks out from my big day with several dress fittings in my near future and a dress that leaves no room for error. It is time to buckle down and make some magic happen. I put together a simple, easy to follow bride to be plan and I thought I would share with all of my fellow brides to be.

Step 1- Prepare. Fail plan, plan to fail. Planning your week around exercise, grocery shopping and meal prepping is the key to success.

Step 2- Do not deprive yourself. No one likes a “hangry” bride (hungry & angry)

Step 3- DRINK WATER. This is easily one of the most important steps in any diet regimen. Try to drink more water than usual, especially if you are increasing your workouts. Pro tip: Drink one glass of water right when you wake up. Not only does it start your water consumption early but it wakes up all your organs and will naturally energize you. Put a glass right by your bed so you can drink it right when you wake up.

Step 4- Be nice to yourself & make obtainable goals.

Here is an easy to follow Diet! Stay tuned for a workout plan!

70b3ec92973ccf35e61f010b95cf5c9d

Meal 1
½ cup of oats, ½ cup of berries and 1 cup of egg whites
or
One piece of Ezekiel toast, 1 cup of egg whites and ¼ avocado

Snack
½ Apple with 2 TBS of Peanut Butter

Lunch
1-2 cups of green vegetables
½ cup of brown rice OR 3 ounces of sweet potato
4 ounces of Chicken, white fish, shrimp or ground LEAN turkey
¼ avocado

sweet_potato_quinoa_patties_a_house_in_the_hills_1

A favorite recipe of mine is the Sweet Potato quinoa patties from the House in the Hills.

Snack
Hard-boiled egg and 1 oz (about 23) almonds

Dinner
1-2 cups of green vegetables
½ cup of brown rice OR 3 ounces of sweet potato
4 ounces of Chicken, white fish, shrimp or ground LEAN turkey
¼ avocado

Dessert
Non-fat, plain Greek yogurt and a ½ cup of your favorite berry

Another favorite recipe of mine is the Warm Berry Compote with Greek Yogurt and Chia Seeds from Lau Sunday Cooks

Greek-yogurt-with-warm-red-berry-compote-and-chia-seeds-Lau-Sunday-cooks-

Condiments that you can use for any meal:

Cooking Spray ( olive oil or coconut)
Mrs. Dash seasonings
Hot sauce (read labels. You want to use something low in calorie)
Salsa
Fresh squeezed lemons and limes
Stevia natural sweetener

 Beverages
Water
Tea
Black coffee (stick to stevia for flavoring)

*don’t skip any meals. Life can get busy, but anytime I skip a meal I turn into the hangry women I referred to above and head straight to the box of Girl Scout cookies that I tried to hide from myself.

*Consistency is key. Stick the plan consistently. It may be an adjustment at first, but after a few days and some results it will become easy.

Best of luck ladies!

Beijos Healthy Protein Shake

To follow up our staying healthy post yesterday, we thought we’d give you a yummy recipe to follow your hard workout.

I’ve been drinking this easy one for a couple years now and it’s really refreshing and full of all the nutrients you need after you push your body to it’s limits.  Here are the simple ingredients…

Lean protein powder (I prefer vanilla flavor) One Scoop

Berries (strawberries, raspberries and black berries) Handful of each

 One Banana

Fruit punch (secret: use crystal light fruit punch, no sugar and only 5 cals per serving!) One cup

meganwelker-food-12 meganwelker-food-19

If you freeze your fruit it can take the place of adding ice, and you’ll have a thick rich taste to the shake. If you don’t freeze your fruit you’ll have to add ice, which is still good, just the consistency won’t be as thick.

Blend all the ingredients together and your done!

meganwelker-food-28 meganwelker-food-26 meganwelker-food-23

So good and refreshing.  Let me know how you like it…it’s one of my fave’s.

Xx Leah
