Halloween Makeup Ideas for the Adults with Tiana Rae Holiday

Let the Halloween posts commence!!!

It’s October so that means it’s time for all things Halloween.  First on our list are some ideas for the adults, because Halloween doesn’t have to be all about the kids.  Last year my friend Alatheia of Art of Being Female had her makeup done  to be a deer and I admired how amazing it was.  This year I teamed up with her to showcase Tiana Rae Holiday, her talented friend and makeup artist.  Tiana is also Mariah Carey’s makeup artist, so I knew I was really in the best hands!

There are four different looks that we tried, each unique and fun.  Great ideas for Halloween, and Tiana is still booking so if you’re in the Southern California area, she’s your girl!  Keep scrolling for all the fun looks and a question and answer with Tiana herself!

Jacquelyn – The Fortune Teller

How and when did you get into the makeup industry?

I have been in the industry for almost 20 years. My mom owned a hair salon in my small mountain town growing up, Big bear Lake. She kinda pushed me to do makeup for her clients but I was a tomboy and didn’t really love makeup. Funny how things turn. When I was 18 years old I applied at Nordstroms and opened the Armani Cosmetics counter. Later transferred to the MAC counter and eventually the MAC Pro store. By networking and working jobs that didn’t pay on the side, I found a mentor, Natalie Macgowen,  who was in the business a very long time. She took me under her wing and showed me how it was in the Industry . She later opened her own agency, Macgowen Spencer Agency and signed me; I did commercials, music videos, photo shoots and celebrities. My very first gig with her was a music video for Velvet Revolver.  Networking and knowing so many people from MAC has opened many doors for me.

You work with lots of celebrities, what are some of your favorite jobs you’ve had?

Someone I know from MAC, Maile, started a huge successful beauty on demand mobile service, Beglammed,  and I stepped in with them. That’s where I met Mariah Carey, Rosario Dawson, Noah Cyrus and many more.  I did a segment for Halloween Makeup on Good Day LA as well.  I’ve been very lucky and fortunate to be where I am and it’s only because of the people I’ve met along the way and the chances I’ve been given.

Alatheia – Pop Art

How did you start doing Halloween makeup?  You are so amazing at it!!

Halloween is my favorite time of year, so blending makeup and Halloween came very natural for me. I love a theme, costumes, things dark and creepy. So that is where my most creative looks come from. Also my son and I have “couple costumes” every year till he tells me to take a hike. Some of our costumes have been Frankenstein and the Bride of Frankenstein, Beetlejuice and Lydia, Darthmaul and Queen Amidala, chucky and bride of chucky, to name a few.

When it comes to Halloween makeup, what are a few of your favorite looks to do…

I always love a good skeleton and Dia De Los Muertos, and clowns.  I find that I get inspiration from Movies, TV, Instagram and entertainment; especially Tim Burton.  I practice on myself when I’m feeling stressed or not creative, it pushes me out of my box.

Leah – The Wooden Doll

If you had a really adventurous client, what would be something you’d love to try for Halloween?

If I could do anything on an adventurous client it would be not only stop at the makeup but also do the hair and styling and than have a photoshoot based around that look. I never get enough pictures or good pictures that showcase the makeup. I like runway looks and avant- garde. The look isn’t what matters necessarily but the face features and costume is what seals the deal. I eventually want to do all of Tom Burtons characters and than make up my own characters that other people want to reproduce. The creative wheel is always a good one to be on.

How long does the Halloween makeup take and how can clients book with you?

I book clients for Halloween starting as early as a year out. I like to have an hour and half to two hours per look. Sometimes more of it’s more detailed. The best way to book me is through email

Kirby – The Ethereal Goddess

Thank you for sharing your talent with us Tiana!  Halloween doesn’t have to be just for the kids, we can get in on the fun too!  Get more Halloween inspiration over on Tiana’s instagram account.

More Halloween posts to come!!

Wedding Spotlight – 10.11 Makeup

Can you believe it’s the last day of July?!  Well I couldn’t end the month without doing a spotlight on one of our wedding vendor friends!  This month’s is another great one in Erica Beukelman, owner of 10.11 Makeup.  I met Erica for the first time when she did my makeup for a maternity session through The Fox and the Sparrow Sessions.  Right away she felt like a friend and I could sense how genuine she is within a few minutes of being around her.

Erica is extremely talented, honest and makes you feel at ease being around her, all things you want from your hair and makeup artist.  She is one of the first people we recommend to our brides for this reason.  She also has the best puns known to man, you literally can’t leave her presence without laughing your butt off.  I admire so many things about this woman including her drive in her business, her friendships and of course how she is as a mom.  Keep scrolling to learn more about this talented lady in our Q&A and to see her beautiful work!

Tell us a little bit about you…

I am a wifey to my hot baby daddy, and a mamma of three boys.  If you were to describe me based on the most common things people tag me in it would be : whales, puns and hallmark movies.  I think that really sums it up.  I have an admittedly weird obsession with humpback whales.  If I wasn’t doing hair and makeup, I would 100% be doing something where I could make puns for a living, like naming nail polish?  And I start listening to Christmas music and looking for Hallmark holiday movies starting in about May of each year.  I live for bad tv and movies that were made for 14 year old girls.  I love rosé out of a can and chips and salsa.  I’m kind of a homebody, and love lazy days and spending time with friends and family.  I also love to travel and explore, and I could probably write a book on how to eat your way through the coast of California and Hawaii.

How and when did you start your career in hair and makeup?

I have always wanted to be a hairstylist. Like I lined up my barbies and styled them all, teaching myself to french-braid on a Barbie head. Right out of high school I wanted to go to cosmetology school, but my parents encouraged me to go to college first. So after completing my Masters program, I enrolled in a cosmetology program, and started 10.11 while in school.

I attribute a lot of my success to the amazing relationships I’ve established and the vendors that refer. I used twitter back when that was a thing (don’t tell my husband I said that because he loves the twitter) and I really put myself out their inorder to build my portfolio. I was very particular with who I worked with and began to define my niche in the industry.

We are more known for a natural beauty style, so I intentionally aligned myself with those I thought would have clients that would prefer that look. I don’t advertise, so all of our business comes from word of mouth and referrals from those relationships with vendors. It’s been pretty incredible to see the growth and evolvement of my company and team. I’m extremely particular with my Artists and have been so thankful to have such a professional and talented group of girls.

What do you love most about working with brides on their big day?

Honestly, I think it goes for any of our clients (bridal or not),  I love helping them recognize their beauty. Watching a client feel comfortable in their own skin, not needing to look like someone else, but seeing their natural features highlighted and brought out, is a beautiful thing. I love the emotion in weddings, the excitement, and it’s special getting to be a part of one of the biggest moments of their lives. Sometimes I get back in my car after a wedding and I’m a little emotional because it’s over and that client feels more like a friend.

I also think that because the majority of our clients come as referrals they trust us to do what we do. Plus I’m kind of a crazy person when it comes to being on time, so I think they really appreciate that as well, and it’s fun for us to get to enjoy the day with them.

What advice do you have for bride’s out there who are looking for a hair and makeup artist for their wedding?

Hire a professional, this is an investment in your wedding. Specifically, hire a professional that specializes in weddings. Skill matters just as much as understanding the importance of timing on a wedding day. Also trust the person you hire and the advice they give. But be honest if you don’t care for something, and don’t overthink it- what you want matters more than what other people want to tell you you want ;)
Do a trial with the person, make sure they have a contract, and if you’re going to be making any changes (hair color, length, etc) plan for that prior to the trial date.
Lastly, be prepared. Have an idea of what you want or don’t want for your wedding look, and then allow your artist to create something for you.

Talk to us about setting goals for you and your business… I know you set a big goal this year and achieved it!

At the end of /beginning of each year my hubs and I have a conversation just reflecting on the year prior and then I always say out loud one goal that seems totally crazy that I have for the year to come. One year I said I wanted work on TV, one year it was to be published in a national magazine, and this year it was to have work up on a billboard… every year I have hit that goal.

I think it places a fire inside to say it out loud and it is motivating.  I have to talk myself out of doubt and discouragement, but it’s almost like saying it out loud resets focus and makes dreams come alive. If you tell yourself you are capable, I think you can achieve anything. I have always loved goal setting, I used to make giant poster-size dream boards haha.

What is your favorite project you’ve done with Beijos?

All of them, duh! But really, I love all of the shoots we do. I love the tutorials. But I would say my fave was probably when we did the “If I were to get married now what would I choose” hair and makeup looks for some of my favorite mamas in the industry!

What are your top 3 beauty tips?

Take care of your skin. Honestly I think when it comes to skin, less is more. I don’t understand big nightly routines of using 85 products. I think the less you put on your skin, making sure the products are pure and clean, the better. So I’d say for skin and face:  cleansing your skin daily, washing your pillows consistently, and changing out your mascara every month will help keep bacteria away.
For hair, I love hair masks for hydration and clarifying shampoos to get out any buildup. I would say don’t overwash color treated hair- invest in some dry shampoo, and use a heat protectant in order to help maintain the integrity of your hair.

What are your top 5 beauty products you can’t live without…

Well personally, if I named 5 products that would be my personal makeup bag in its entirety haha.

 Mascara, always.
Beauty blender
Facial oil- I love jojoba oil, as well as Beauty Counter’s facial oils.
Rose water spray
Sea salt/ ocean spray

Bonus, lip gloss also from Beauty Counter. Its THE best gloss I have ever tried… and no I dont sell it :)

You have made some amazing friendships through this industry, talk to us about that and why they are so important to you…

I have made lifelong friendships in this industry and I am so grateful. I think its so important to have healthy, non-competitive, friendships with others that share in the same passions as you. I love that quote “comparison is the thief of joy”, because it’s true.  It’s hard, but it’s a major truth bomb.  There is so much work to go around, there is no room for cattiness, but always room for celebrating others’ successes and victories. Surround yourself with people who can be cheerleaders as well as teachers. So I have a lot of incredible makeup artists/ hair stylists friends that I value so much.

I also think its incredibly important to surround yourself with people who will challenge you and inspire you to become a better person (we always have room for growth). For instance, I know I am a better businesswoman because of some of the women I have surrounded myself with that have strengths I did not. Relationships are a big thing for me, genuinely caring for people on a personal, not just business, level, and I am so grateful for this industry and the lifers I have made :)

Thank you Erica for being so inspiring and sharing your story with us!

New Years Eve Make Up Looks

This week it’s all about New Years Eve and how we can best prepare you for that night!  So today we partnered with Janel from Fiore Beauty who did all the amazing looks at our recent New Years Eve shoots this year including the brunch we featured on Monday here and our party we are featuring tomorrow so stay tuned for that beauty! I’m seriously in love with all of these looks, they are fresh, beautiful and a super class act!!

So here we go… we are starting with Hannah:

We decided to go with a bright pop on the lip and a fun glittery eye. This look will also work with a shimmer on the eye just make sure it’s a soft color so it won’t compete with the lip color. We chose bright pink to highlight the soft blonde in her hair. We also used a soft pink glitter to accent her green eyes. New Year’s Eve makeup doesn’t always have to be dark and smokey. This is a fresh look that still says you’re ready to party!!!!

Next up is Jen:

For the next look Jen was wearing a beautiful green top so we used a cream/liquid silver shadow on her lid and dusted a mint powder over it. We wanted it to match and it looked fab!!! For her lips we used a soft peachy tone. Again using color to brighten instead of dark tones is always a great way to have long lasting selfie ready NYE makeup!!!

Now we have Hannah:

We chose a brown smokey bronze eye and a pale pink lip.  Building depth on the lid with a dark brown shadow stick and then layering bronze shadow on top…it really emphasized her blue eyes, adding just the right amount of drama!

And the lovely Janel herself:

Janel has almond shaped eyes so we did a smokey eye that was darker on the outside corners and more golden on the inside lids to really brighten and accent the eyes.  A peachy nude lip brought everything together to keep it looking fresh.

And here is Abby:

We wanted to give her a holiday, classic red lip.  Mysterious Red Velvet Matte Pencil (Nars) was the perfect red for her skin tone and since it’s matte, minimal upkeep is needed all through the night.  Perfect for that NYE kiss!
These looks are gorgeous, and thank you so much Janel at Fiore Beauty!! We definitely have our picks that we will be sporting in a few days.
Adios 2016, and we can’t wait to see what 2017 brings!!
Love, love, love New Years eve!!
xx Leah

Now Smell This- Beijos Picks (National Fragrance Day)

Did you know that tomorrow is National Fragrance Day? Isn’t it funny how there is a national day for everything, we can’t complain about this one. Its a perfect spring day to gush over some good smelling scents.

If you think about it, a certain fragrance can trigger a certain memory of someone or something.  I’m sure when you smell certain scents, a person or story will pop up in your head. My mom is a die hard perfume lover, and we have gotten her so many thru the years. When my kids come home from a weekend at Nemas, their clothes and even them smell like my mom’s perfume. Which one? I will never know, but they all smell like Nema. I secretly am not a fan of strong perfume, but these scents of hers are a comfort feeling for me.

What’s your favorite scent? Does it remind you of someone or something? I bet if you sit back and think about it, a story will pop up.

Its all about floral and tropical scents for me like jasmine, lavender, lemon flowers, gardenias, coconut, and guava. I love using all natural and organic oil instead of the standard perfume as well. You still get the sweet floral scents, but just in a more delicate way. Let’s see the roundup of our favorite fragrances.

Photos by Jessie Salas

Lets start with this beauty….

Epic Gardenia by Strange Invisible

Now this is a true perfume scent that I love. I use Epic Gardenia on special occasions with the hubby. I spray this in the air then walk thru it, it allows the scent to wrap your body in the sweet smell of gardenia. It’s nice to have a bottle of perfume for special occasions, switch it up a bit.

Strange Invisible’s fragrances are certified organic, wildcrafted, biodynamic, and hydro-distilled essences with genuine inspiration and compelling narratives. Each entirely natural perfume is designed, decanted, and bottled within our own natural fragrance house based in Venice, California.

This bottle sits out on my vanity, its just to pretty to hid in a cabinet. Check out more of these stunning beauties here. There is a scent for everyone.

Next up, its one of my daily favorites.

Coconut Isle by Forager Botanicals.

I use body oil as my daily fragrance choice. Right after I get out of the shower I will use it on my arms and chest. Close your eyes and you are on a tropical vacation with this scent. Its a very light and airy oil, you won’t feel greasy at all.

This oil is a silky soft blend of almond, jojoba and apricot oil. All natural and has notes of green coconut with a touch of tropical fruit. The entire vegan line is color, paraben, sulfate and preservative free. Pretty cool huh?!?

I love this brand as they create scents that are as close to mother nature made it. Check out more of their oils here.

Lastly, two perfume oils that come in a roller that I carry with me in my purse and are great for traveling.

Malibu Lemon Blossom Perfume Roll-On

I’m sure have your heard of the Pacifica Brand? They are an all natural vegan and cruelty-free. You can find their products at your local health store, I get mine at Whole Foods.

This scent is perfect for spring. Its fresh scent captures the free spirit of the Pacific Ocean with Lemon Blossom, Litsea Cubeba, flowering Angel’s Trumpet, fresh herbs and salty sea breezes.

We plant jasmine and lemon trees in our backyard just for the scents they provide in spring. Having lemon and jasmine come thru the windows on a spring day is my favorite. There is just something relaxing about it. Even when its a bit nutty around the house, you get smell of lemon flowers blooming, and all your worries just went out the window. This scent gives me the same feeling. If I’m feeling stressed, this is my cure.

Last, another fun perfume roll-on.

This is a fresh floral blend of 100% pure essential oils of rose absolute, ylang ylang, lavender and sandalwood infused with organic jojoba oil.

Its another favorite if you love those spring days. I found mine when I was wandering the beauty section at Whole Foods. I love the packaging of this roll-on as well, just so pretty in pink.

There you have it!

Happy national fragrance day!

Perfectly Pastel – Pantone’s 2016 Colors of the Year

Each year we wait in anticipation to see what the notorious Pantone Color of the Year will be… This year they surprised everyone and went with TWO amazing colors!!  Rose Quartz and Serenity…  We are loving these pretty soft colors so much and can’t wait to mix them in with our events, we think they are a perfect combo for a Spring wedding, or even a lovely ladylike bridal shower!!

There are so many ways to utilize these pretty pastels and we are sharing one of our favorites… with makeup!  Last year we teamed up with our friend and makeup artist Kierra Scheffer to share our favorite ways to incorporate their color of the year (marsala) into our makeup, and this year we are doing the same.  Check out all of the loveliness that Miss Kierra did to create these looks that you can easily create yourself!

All photos by Anthony Grippa

Let’s start with Rose Quartz…

Creating a soft and pretty palate is so sweet and delicate, we just love the way this turned out!

What Kierra used:

Laura Mercier Shimmer Bloc – Pink Mosaic
MAC Lip Color – Girl About Town
Laura Mercier Palette – Morning Dew, Espresso Bean, African Violet and Noir

Beijos-007 Kierra first used the Pink Mosaic Shimmer Bloc for a wash of a shimmery rose quartz color on the cheeks and eyes.  She then used this amazing Laura Mercier Palette (that is now on our list of must have makeup items), she specifically used the Morning Dew as the base color on the eyes, Espresso Bean for the brow color, the African Violet in the crease of the eyes and the Noir as the eyeliner.

Beijos-001 Lastly she used the Mac Lip Color in Girl About Town for the lips, which adds a nice POP, don’t you think?

Beijos-006 Beijos-002 Next, Serenity… For this we had to go with a little fun and a little glam!

Here’s what Kierra used:

Mac Lip Color – Hug Me
Laura Mercier Palette – Morning Dew, Espresso Bean, Bronze Glow
Laura Mercier Baked Eye Color – Lagoon
Ardell False Lashes

Beijos-015 Kierra used the Laura Mercier Palette again with Morning Dew as the base color and Espresso Bean as the brow color.  She next used the Bronze Glow on the eyelids and the Baked Eye Color in Lagoon as the “serenity” eye liner smudged into the lash line on top and bottom.  The bronze and blue complement one another without overpowering the look, just a hint of glam color!

Beijos-010 Beijos-009 She finished it off with the nude lip color from MAC in Hug Me and her favorite Ardell false eyelashes!  Doesn’t Leah look oh so sexy!?  Meow…

Beijos-011 And there you have it!  Using the Pantone Colors of the year in your makeup is as easy and gorgeous as that!
