Mother’s Day Gift Guide

One of my favorite holidays is right around the corner, Mother’s Day!  It’s the day to show your mama how much you love and appreciate her, and I can’t think of someone who deserves affection more.  Since we are mother’s ourselves we really look forward to this day to focus on family and reflect on what really matters.  I put together this Mother’s Day Gift Guide for you, because it’s never too early to start thinking about what to get her!  Plus, I made it super easy for you to shop these items at the bottom of this post!  So keep scrolling for all the details!

One thing that I always want as a mother myself is some good relaxing time… Some time to myself, even if it is just an hour!  So a massage from my friend Melody at Here & Now Massage is a definite must!  You can read more about her from our post earlier this week, but she is doing an amazing Mother’s Day special… A free upgrade to a 75 minute massage with the purchase of an 1 hour massage gift certificate.  Now that will definitely make Mama happy!!

Continuing with the relaxing trend, our friends at The Little Market have the prettiest and yummiest bath salts.  These are great to give along with the massage and encourage the busy Mom in your life to take a break.  They also have great spa gift sets if you want to really spoil her!  And this pretty robe by Eberjey is simple and sweet, something for relaxing time and something she will use day after day!

Other items for Mom?  Accessories are always a great and easy gift!  I don’t know about you but buying clothes can be tough with sizing and all, so accessories are just a no brainer.  I’m in love with this Mar Y Sol Tulum tote, the perfect Mom bag for Summer to fit all her “stuff”.  I’m a fan of anything blush and these Raen Torrey sunglasses along with the Cleobella Sevigny clutch gave me major heart eyes.

I just got this Brixton Small Plans Fedora and these Vanessa Mooney Astrid earrings myself and can’t recommend them enough!  Every one needs a good Summer hat, and when you’re a busy mom at the park with your kiddos it’s nice to keep the sun out of your eyes and your skin safe.  Plus, it’s super cute!  Statement earrings are big for Spring/Summer and these make a statement with out being obnoxious.  They are pretty, feminine and perfect for Mom.

Last but not least is this amazing book, Eat Beautiful by Wendy Rowe.  The older I get the more I want to take care of myself, especially my skin.  I’m sure most women feel the same way.  This book details how specific ingredients feed your skin, offering breakdowns of the vitamins and nutrients they provide.  Plus, the pink and rose gold on the cover are real pretty to look at!  Haha!  But seriously, my own Mom is always looking for new recipes to try so I know a gorgeous cookbook would be a great gift for her.

Now don’t forget to spoil that special Mom in your life this year, plan ahead because Mother’s Day will be here before you know it!

Self Care – Massage for the Busy Mom

Earlier this year I spoke about Self Care and how I really want to make it one of my resolutions for 2017.  Well, lucky me, one of my dearest friends Melody has gone into the field of therapeutic massage with her own business, HERE & NOW Massage.  She is sharing tons of amazing information today on why it’s so important.  Best part of all?!  Melody is offering $10 off your first session if you mention BEIJOS, so keep reading!!  Melody is so well versed in the benefits of massage, it was really eye opening for me to hear what she had to say.

As a busy work from home Mom – which with a toddler and baby is nearly impossible somedays – a massage sounds AMAZING, but also unrealistic.  I barely have the time to wash my hair, how will I have the time for that?!  But after talking to Melody and learning more about the importance of massage I’ve decided it definitely needs to be added to my “self care list”.

Being a mother is one of the most selfless jobs out there.  You are constantly putting yourself last and your kids (and anyone else around) first.  With Mother’s Day fast approaching, I can’t think of anything else better than to gift a relaxing HERE & NOW.  Just gifting an hour or so of quiet calmness is basically like gifting a million dollars to a Mom!  Because I literally can’t think of anyone who deserves a massage more than a Mom.

Melody came over to my house recently to give me a massage.  Yes, she does at home massages which is a total game changer!!!  If I’m being completely honest, it’s hard for me to go get a hair cut or even my nails done.  When you’re that busy it just seems like a chore at times to go get that done.  However, as soon as I’m there and I can relax, I love it… It’s just getting there and making the plans to do so that is tough.  But with how easy Melody made it for me, how could I say no?!

So let’s check in with Melody and hear more about why massage is such an important self care concept…

Robe by Maison du Soir

First of all, let me introduce my beautiful friend Melody!

HELLO! My name is Melody and I am a Massage Therapist in Orange County, California. After 10 years in the corporate world of public relations and marketing, I felt compelled to make a change in order to combine my love of working with people and my passion for holistic wellness.

In my pursuit of becoming a Holistic Health Practitioner, I graduated from California College of Physical Arts as a Certified Massage Practitioner and began my business HERE & NOW shortly thereafter, offering specialized bodywork, mindful wellness and a holistic approach to better health.

Working with a variety of clients ranging from individuals looking for relaxation to those working to overcome injuries through a therapeutic massage approach, I specialize in an integrative blend of Swedish and Therapeutic practices to provide pain relief, release of muscle tension, stress reduction, improved circulation and more.

Becoming a massage therapist has brought me to a place of where I am able to practice living in the moment – in the HERE & NOW – by focusing on and helping others in body, mind and spirit through bodywork, wellness and better health.

Why is self-care and massage important for women?

Whether you’re a momma (new or experienced), an executive, a business owner, a mentor, a friend (and the list goes on), it’s likely you have many responsibilities in your day-to-day life and it’s also likely you don’t put yourself on your “to-do” list. With the laundry list of things that need to get done around the house, with the kids and school, at work, etc., putting time aside for yourself is easier said than done. By the time your day is over, you’re wiped out and you just want to catch up on some much needed z’s.

So why should you incorporate self-care and massage into your daily/weekly/monthly routine? If you don’t start now it won’t be long before you’re battered from exhaustion (if you’re not already) and operating in a mental fog (sound familiar?) where it’s hard to make it through the day without forgetting important appointments, getting through your tasks, and truly being there (in body, mind and spirit) for the ones you love. With the (most) important role you have as a mom, putting yourself first, at least some of the time, is the only way you’re going to be at your best and massage therapy is one of the easiest ways to get there! Massage not only incorporates relaxation of your body and mind but also has some serious health benefits that you probably could benefit from.

What are the benefits of massage?

There are so many benefits to massage therapy that it’s hard to list just a few but let’s start with what a mom needs most – some serious (and solo) R&R! No kids, no hubbie, no work, no distractions (are you excited yet?). Beyond just the obvious tranquility and rest you’ll be giving your body and mind, the list of health benefits of massage is even more impressive and perfectly suited for the new/busy/working momma:

Manage Anxiety & Depression – Motherhood is the greatest undertaking for most women. It comes with highs and lows, the good and the bad, the pretty and the ugly. It’s not easy! If you’re suffering from postpartum, talk to your doctor about how massage therapy could help you.

Ease Pain – Tight shoulders, neck tension and low back pain sound familiar? Whether you’re breast feeding, carrying around your toddler or just dealing with day-to-day stresses, pain is probably second nature at this point. It shouldn’t be.

Hormone Regulation/Balance –  Are your hormones out of whack? If you’ve just had a baby it’s likely they’re all over the place with estrogen and progesterone hormone levels changing and prolactin and oxytocin hormone levels rising to facilitate breastfeeding. Those with decreased libido, fatigue, migraines, mood changes, irregular periods, hot flashes, and poor focus can also benefit greatly from balancing hormones.

Improve Sleep – Okay fine, this one is not entirely up to you if you have a newborn or if you’re sleep training but at the end of the day, you need your z’s, deep (REM) sleep. Or maybe there is so much stress in your life that you’re suffering from insomnia. Bottom line, you can’t afford lousy sleep!

Boost Immunity: Got germs? Massage therapy increases the activity level of the body’s white blood cells that work to combat viruses. Because who has time for the flu?

Promote a Better Sense of Well-Being – We all need a break every now and then. Time to recharge, rejuvenate, refresh and get centered. Not only will you feel relaxed but you’ll also feel re-energized and ready to take on life even better than before.

The list is long but here are a few more things massage therapy may also help with: digestive disorders; tension headaches; soft tissue strains; circulation; reducing blood pressure; sciatica, chronic pain; Carpal Tunnel Syndrome; rheumatoid arthritis pain; fibromyalgia; chemotherapy-related nausea..

How do I maximize my in-home massage experience?

BEFORE: Get someone to watch your kid(s). Give yourself two hours for a 60 minute massage – 30 minutes to get ready and relax pre-massage and 30 minutes post-massage to shower, dress and return (slowly) back to your normal routine. Before your massage, pick a quiet room in your house, take a hot shower, light some candles or a diffuser with essential oils and put on your favorite soothing music.

DURING: R-E-L-A-X. It might not be easy but this is YOU-time. No kids, no housework, no co-workers or cell phone…just YOU. Take deep breaths, focus on your body and the movements of your inhalations and exhalations and keep your mind in a neutral place. You want to stay in the preset, in the now.

AFTER: Hydrate. Hydrate. Hydrate. Massages are dehydrating and it’s important to replenish by drinking plenty of water. Fluids (and toxins) are pumped into your circulatory system, where it heads toward your kidneys eventually moving out of your system. The water provides your kidneys with the water they need to effectively eliminate waste and toxins.

Try to take it easy (again, easier said than done) the rest of the day, practice some breathing techniques if you get frustrated or if your mind starts to wander, and remind yourself of what good you did for yourself with the massage you had earlier.

What if I’ve never had a massage? What if I’m not comfortable with my post-baby body? What if I can’t relax?

First timer? No problem – there’s a first for everything. Your in-home massage therapist will come prepared with everything needed (table, sheets, oils, music) and will explain the entire process (basically you lay down and relax while the therapist does all the work). This is your time, you’re in a safe place and there is nothing for you to worry about. Leave the stresses and your self-judgements at the door, and take this time to put your mind at ease. Still not able to relax? Take deep, long breaths, imagine yourself on your dream vacation and anytime your mind starts to wander, bring it back to your body and the present moment. Have more questions? Check out the frequently asked questions here: Here &  Now website.

What if I don’t have time?

MAKE THE TIME! Do I need to say it again? MAKE. THE. TIME. That’s right, you need it, you deserve it and you’ve earned it. The best part of an in-home massage is that you don’t have to leave the house – no bags to pack, traffic to fight, parking to find, or extra time to plan around. Let’s face it, we don’t all have the funds to enjoy what some may consider a “luxury”, but at the end of the day, self-care is crucial for you to be the best mom to your children, partner to your spouse, employee to your boss, friend to your girlfriends, daughter, sister, boss… So whether you’re getting a massage, making it to your favorite yoga class, taking a quick nap, getting a mani/pedi, or even indulging in 60 (uninterrupted) minutes of the latest episode of The Bachelor, MAKE TIME FOR YOU.

How often should I be receiving massages?

Brush aside any thoughts that massage is only a feel-good way to indulge or pamper yourself. To the contrary, massage can be a powerful tool to help you take charge of your health and well-being, it be a specific health condition or you’re simply looking for a stress reliever. Whether you have the financial means to get weekly massages or just one from time to time, the benefits you’ll receive will make a huge impact on the quality of your life.

In the Orange County area? Book your in-home massage with licensed massage therapist Melody Althaus, owner of Here & Now Massage | Wellness | Holistic Health.

Remember, if you mention BEIJOS you receive $10 off of your first session!!  So go treat yo’self or even gift a Mama you love with the best gift of all – some TLC!

ENJOY!!! And don’t forget to take care of your self!!! XX

Mama, You’re a Peach – Mother’s Day Lunch

We know Mother’s Day was yesterday, but don’t you think Mama deserves just one more day of celebration??  Call us biased, but we think so!!!

The lovely Isobel of Bel and Beau reached out to us a few weeks ago about putting together a pretty little styled Mother’s Day lunch for her and her mama pals along with their kiddos.  We jumped at the chance, because hey, we love a pretty party!!  This one was at the gorgeous Barrels and Branches in sunny Encinitas, CA via The Venue Report; the perfect gardening store with lots of greenery and florals along with a fabulous spot for any type of event!!

unspecified-7 unspecified-6 unspecified-5 Since it was a Mama party we had some scheming to do… I came across this pretty still life of a few peaches and thought “Mama, you’re a peach” would be the cutest little theme and we just went with it,!  We enlisted some of our favorite vendors to make it special and we are so excited to share it with you today!!  This little soiree was put together in about 10 days, and we have our lovely vendor friends to thank for helping us make it happen!!

It was also seen on 100LayerCakelet and The Venue Report over the weekend!

All photos by the lovely Kayla Adams

Gotta star out with the beautiful paper goods and laser cutting amazingness by our girl Meghann Miniello, have you noticed how much we love her?!  She’s been our go to girl lately and she made all of this prettiness happen for us in less than a week’s time!!  Gotta love her!!!

unspecified Can we just have a moment for those laser cut placemats?!

unspecified-2 Now, on to the pretty tablescape… We seriously can’t get enough!!  The pretty peach just pops with all the greenery around it… How gorgeous are the florals by MV Florals?  She just kills it every time!!  And we always love playing with the best rentals from Adore Folklore and Hostess Haven!

unspecified-22 unspecified-16 unspecified unspecified-2 We loved each place setting, isn’t it just lovely?!

unspecified-12 unspecified-13 And the food spread was super yummy, we enlisted the help of The Cheese Store of San Diego, and all we have to say is YUM!!!

unspecified-11 unspecified-9 unspecified-10 unspecified-8 And of course every good party needs amazing desserts!!!  Hey There Cupcake is seriously the best and took our vision and just ran with it!  We love everything she created, and she told us that the bakery smelled of yummy peaches all day, makes my mouth water just thinking about it!

unspecified-13 unspecified-26 unspecified-24 unspecified-25 unspecified-23 unspecified-27 Now, all you have to do is insert some amazing Mamas!!!  Here’s a little bit about why Isobel organized this pretty party!

“With Mother’s Day fast approaching, I wanted to create a time and space to celebrate and connect with mamas who inspire me and lift me up. There is something quite magical about connecting and spending time with like-minded mothers.  You suddenly realize that you are not alone on this journey of motherhood. I worked with Beijos Events to create a mama/child playdate luncheon, You are a Peach, to gather, connect, and celebrate all that is motherhood.”

More photos and details of this great party with all the mamas and their littles too!!

Mother’s Day Advice and Thoughts

Mother’s Day is this Sunday and we really can’t think of a better holiday, I mean celebrating motherhood is so important and necessary considering all that they (we, haha) do.  We reached out to a few of our favorite mamas to find out their favorite moments or things about being a mom or the best advice they could give.  It was so powerful and inspiring to read everyone’s responses, we hope you are as moved as we were with these thoughts on Motherhood and advice…

Leah Carriger of Beijos

meganwelker-outfitsandmama-37 I haven’t been a mom for very long in the grand scheme of things, I just turned 4 last month in mom years, but I have to say I’ll never forget what my parents told me when I told them I was pregnant with Edie.  They were over the moon with joy and the first thing out of my dad’s tearing up eyes was, “Mija, having children is the best thing you will do and experience in life”.  In my own emotional state of pregnancy, it made me tear up too.  Plus my dad had never showed his emotion to me like this before, so it was a great moment.  But I really didn’t understand the scope of the statement even then.  Today when I think about being a mom, I reference what he said to me that day, because it’s so simple, and so true.  No matter what I do I always go back to those powerful words.

Abby Guido of Beijos

yasminsarai_beijosevents_abby'smother'sday-7 I’m still in awe that I was blessed with being a mom to both a daughter and son. They are such opposites, and are truly little mini me’s. Its amazing to see parts of you and your husband in these two little souls. I will often stare at them, and not because they said something funny or did something wrong, its realizing the amount of love I have for these two, and that I get to be their mom. They probably think I’m a tad nutty, cause they will ask often, “mommy why are you staring at me like that?” One day they will realize the mommy crazy stares, and kiss attacks they get every day. I strive everyday to be the best version of myself for them.

Jacquelyn Kazas of Beijos

meganwelker-outfitsandmama-86 Every day as a mother to Court amazes me… It amazes me that my body grew this amazing little person, it amazes me that I could love him so much it hurts and he amazes me every day with his eagerness to learn, his hilarious sense of humor and his endearing love.  Court has a way of always making me feel great about myself, even when I have no makeup on and there are dark circles under my eyes, he looks at me like I am the best and most beautiful person he’s ever seen… I wish I could see myself through his eyes, and I hope that I live up to everything he thinks of me.  One of my favorite moments of the day is putting him to sleep at night, he always hugs and kisses his daddy and his doggy Dolly and then we go to lay down together in his bed for a bit…  I’ll always ask him if he had a good day and he says “Yes Mama” and squeezes me really tightly.  Being a mother isn’t easy, it’s the hardest job I’ve ever had… There are days that are tough, especially with a  toddler, but I try my best to be patient and loving just like my parents were with me and I know as long as I’m giving it my best, I’m doing a great job.

Taylor Sterling of Glitter Guide

Processed with VSCOcam with a6 preset Motherhood teaches me so much every single day. I find it fascinating how much having a child teaches you about life and who you are and who you want to be. I love those small moments where my daughter says something funny, surprising or just looks at me with so much love I could burst. Those moments make all the hard parts melt away and makes you want to bottle that feeling up forever.

It’s not only children who grow. Parents do, too. As much as we watch to see what our children do with their lives, they are watching us to see what we do with ours. I can’t tell my children to reach for the sun. All I can do is reach for it, myself. —Joyce Maynard

Julia Wheeler of Gunn & Swain

IMG_3180 My favorite moments with Gram are slow mornings when we head to the beach for breakfast with just the two of us and play in the sand with nowhere to be, in no rush, just hanging out and spending time together. It’s not always easy to stop and just be present and it’s easy to get frustrated with a needy or whiny toddler, but in those quiet moments, it’s when I remember that this all goes by so fast and I want to soak up as much of this time with him as I can.

Meg Perotti of Meg Perotti Photography and Little Meg

004133-R1-009 Being a mother is full of so many heavy moments. It’s not just the physical literal weight you carry by growing your children and then hoisting them onto your hip for years but it’s the weight of raising a human, of being everything for them all the time. But, motherhood is also full of a lightness- a take your breath away, sock me in the gut I love you so much, this is the meaning of everything lightness. For me, it’s the answer to all of my questions about purpose and these moments are my favorite thing about motherhood. This heavy stuff- the weight? It’s hard to ignore – and on some days it’s easy to get buried under- but what makes motherhood so special to me is how it brings back the ability to enjoy simple things in big ways. The way you can look at your child doing something as mundane as using a spoon and cry because, “Look! She is using a spoon!” or how you get to enjoy things like peanut butter and jelly sandwiches again and how watching your child see the beach for the first time- seeing her run through the waves with wind in her hair makes you want to take her to the beach every day. Being a mama has given me a lust for living like I have never known. It’s a gift to be given the ability to feel my heart swell every day and to find beauty and love while carrying a weight so big as a life.

Erica Beukelman of 1011 Makeup

joel_erica_2015_101 I would say the most unexpected thing, and one of my favorites about being a mom, is how much I am the one that actually learns from my kids. Momming is hard, and they have taught me so much about grace, and love… and I love their love for discovery and endless questions: Like when my four year old asked me “how did you and daddy make the baby in your tummy” I panicked and said “Um, it’s hard to explain buddy”, and he responded with “Im pretty sure you used a cotton ball”… their little minds are just the best. It is an honor to be a mom of all boys and to teach them about chivalry. As a mom of boys, I have also planned ahead and told my hubs I will be buying my daughter-in-laws wedding dresses in order to ensure my spot at the fittings :)

Delbarr Moradi of Delbarr Moradi Photography

12224603_1498041767158107_1489978910_n I ran down the stairs in an effort to get Delara (my 3 year old) out the door for school and when I looked behind me, she was no where to be found.

“Delara???”, I called out.
“Yes, Mom?”
“Where are you? We’re going to be late!”
“I just hugging and kissing Aria!…coming!!”
and then my heart exploded.
Delara loves her sister more than I could have ever hoped for at this stage. They are 2 years apart and as crazy as life can be at times, the moments I see them interacting and Delara loving on her little sister makes me melt and reminds me this is ALLLL worth it. Crazy mom hair and all.
**photo was when Aria was a lot smaller, she’s 9 months now. I just love this so much though because its my heart and soul in a pic. I love being a mom to these two girls.**

Jesi Haack of Jesi Haack Design

FullSizeRender Have grace for each other. It takes a village. So use your village. And be someone’s village. Tell random moms you see how good of a job they are doing. Refrain from judgement. Like, REALLY try and refrain. No one TRIES to be a crappy mom. So give the benefit of the doubt. Give a smile instead of a disdainful glance. Be each others teammates rather than each others competition. There are many successful ways to raise a child. Be open. Be cheerful. Be in it together.

Yasmin Sarai of Yasmin Sarai Photography

yasminsarai_beijosevents_yasmin_mother'sday-3 Motherhood is hard, messy, and requires so much sacrifice; but it is such a grand calling and children are a blessing. I truly try to keep this perspective in my day-to-day life as a mom, during the challenging, not-so-pretty moments, when my toddler is throwing a fit or my newborn is fussy. Most importantly, my faith keeps me anchored and reminds me that all the sacrifices are worth it because my girls are my greatest legacy in this world. Both God and my husband help me to be a better mom and show me so much patience and grace, so my best advice to any mom is to nurture and invest in those important relationships, as well as friendships with other women, both young and old, who you admire and respect, to support you and help you keep a healthy perspective on motherhood and life. I’m so thankful to be mama to two of the sweetest girls around, Gwendolyn May (age 2) and Evangeline Roux (age 2 months). A few of our favorite things to do together are walking to church every Sunday and working in the garden. Gwen likes to help me water the plants and, like most kids, likes to get her hands dirty. Reading books, tea parties, and of course, impromptu dance parties in the living room are some of our favorite go-to fun activities. We also love getting cozy and curling up on the couch to watch British kid’s shows… the accents and music on those shows make them less mind-numbing and much more pleasant to watch, haha!

Amber Thrane of Dulcet Creative

unspecified My favorite thing about being a mom is getting to be around the BEST little teachers at all times. They have taught me so much through their love. They’ve literally LOVED me into a better person. At this point they don’t have any other mom to compare me, no social norm to judge me against, so I am free to be my weirdest, most “real” self without any judgement. That is powerful. It heals the deepest parts of you. I can get too hopped up on coffee and sing in the car at the top of my lungs and force them to join me in a three part harmony to a song they probably shouldn’t even be learning, teach them funny dance moves just so I can laugh at them attempt them or sit on the kitchen floor eating a tub of ice cream with them for dinner because I’m too lazy to make dinner and they think its all AWESOME. I can do no wrong. Someday they will be teenagers and think I’m SO embarrassing but I’m soaking up all these lessons in self-acceptance and self-love while I can! And if you think about it, maybe through all my failing and learning along the way I’m teaching them a lesson too: Its OK to be you.

Hope you all have the happiest of Mother’s Days
